Question This ok?

Until I get bigger jigs this setup is ok:

20lb big game test line > 30in leader > hook/bait

right?

Plum,
That setup will work fine. In about a month the shorelines will start to fill with fisherman and then you can copycat what the successful guys are using (maybe you'll be the successful guy).
I recommend going to the MSBA show March 23-24 at cordage park in plymouth. IMHO the best fishing show in Massachusetts.
Plus they'll have plenty of heavy jigs there too.

this is how i set up when chunking..
mainline with a fish finder on it,tied to a barrel type swivel tied to 24-30 inch leader with a hook tied to the end of the leader. you can attach any size sinker to the fish finder.

if using live bait such as eels remove the fishfinder.

if you want to use a plug.. cut off old set up and tie on a 24-30" leader with a barrel swivel on one end and a snap swivel on the other and attach you plug to the snap swivel.

i use #50-60 lbs test mono for leader material..

the set up you have will work fine for jigs

good luck

Plum, stay right where you are...@ striped-bass.com...and feel free to ask questions.

If you follow the advise you've already been given you'll get a fast start on a lifetime of great sport fishing...you'll make some great friends...and you'll even learn how to deal with cantankerous people -- ignore them and they will go away.

Plum - don't worry about it and no need to go. There is nothing you did wrong here and feel free to speak up.

OK - I'm lightening up too. Between setting off the smoke alarms and all, here is the deal - #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, your post came across as brash and sarcastic, on the phone you said you didn't want to sound that way and were trying to be funny, use the smilies please ...

And don't forget you have to be there at precisely 4:55, not 4:56, that would be too late just joking

Plum, like the guys said, don't go anywhere. It is good to ask questions when you don't knowI think once you start gaining more experience, the questions will change. But you're on the right track asking about your terminal tackle, since if it is not set up close to correct, it may not be effective.
Some people joke around on the boards and others don't have as much patience, just take it slow and one step at a time and things will get clearer.

Plum thanks for asking all the questions. I have been out of bass fishing for way to many years and all the new gear and rods and reels and hooks and lines and plugs and techniques can be overwhelming to me and I thought I knew how to fish AS it turns out I was doing it all wrong back then but with some help from all the good people on this site we will both get fish this year

PS if you ever get the chance to be in the Fairhaven area and would like to see me make a fool of myself and catch lots of fish at the same time give me a call. We could take a boat ride to Cuttyhunk and give it a try. Check your pms I will send you my cell # feel free to call any time you might be in the area!

Probably the most capable surf fisherman that I have fished with - I wish I was half as good - (Bill - don't let your head swell - insert smiley )

GB - Blooze right - if that's lousy fishing skills, I'd have a lot of high 40 pound fish too... And I would be happy to consider myself "backwards" in fishing...

Thanks guys but I have much more luck than skill, that and I learn very well. If someone has an idea that sounds good I give it a try. This is the last big fish I cought back then and yes we did sell them at that time this fish sold for $75.00 at a place called Porkys. I wish I had the fish to catch now and not the money then!!!!

Plum, I'm sure if you go to the show you can catch up with someone who would be more than happy to show you how to put a rig together. Just throw a little line, some swivels and hooks and such in your pocket.
