Charity plug display - Need your help!

Here's the deal

A newly remodeled restaurant (was the old Schooners in the Melville Marina) on the water in Portsmouth, RI wants to build a showcase to display around 30 high-quality custom striper plugs as a large piece of artwork, in a glass case exhibit. I’m very good friends with the new manager…it’s actually my personal collection that sparked the idea…

The theme of the display is to show off the striper plug-building culture in New England, and how the custom garage/basement builders are really not that far from the commercial guys. It’s a very local and unique scene we have, and as we all know there is some amazing work being done.

What I need from you

I'm asking for anyone who's a commercial or personal builder to submit a single (or more if you want) hi-quality new/like new wooden plug for the display. We need about 30 plugs to make this a success. If we get more plugs than that they'll build a bigger display case!

As this is an interest piece we’re looking for big and colorful plugs, the more interesting the better. The display would be in a central location at eye level near the bar where people would be able to get very close…

No BigFish...this isn't a grand master plug ho'ing scheme

This is what I've negotiated with the owner to draw your quality participation.

1. Free Advertising and/or personal recognition - Every artist/builder would have their name and city displayed along with their work. Commercial builders would be allowed a website listing or short tagline, or a plug could be donated in a shop’s name to get the advertising blurb.

2. Benefits a local charity - As this would be very nice collection and would obviously have some value, the display would run for 3-5 years and then be auctioned off to benefit a charity of our choosing to be determined before the display was installed via an online vote of participants.

3. Free food - Every submitter would get a coupon for a free appetizer at the restaurant. Use it or give to a friend.

I'm going to start the donation with the mackeral danny painted on a Salty blank pictured below.

Please let me know ASAP if you’d like to participate, and don't hesitate to make any suggestions on how to make this a success. It's a unique and neat opportunity and I can't do it alone!

Thanks,

-spence

Consider it done

I could swap out my giant jointed death swimmer, but it's not as colorful

As for a Charity alot of the folks here are familiar with the work our club The Shark River Surf Anglers.does with kids at our trout contest. Not excactly a RI thing but we gather an spend 12-15 grand on the day. Its huge this yr for instance. We are giving away something like 120 rod an reel combo's along with tons of tackle to cover 300 kids..never mind stocking a small pond wit 5000 dollars worth of huge trout.
Check out the link.

Nope, but given that you were the first responder I though I'd kiss your backside for effect

The design is up to you, but it's a chance to do something creative...variety would be great!

2006 is the year of the rubbah, so I'd think the nebe eel would be ok assuming it was provided in a few colors along with a Surf Hog plug

That plug is entirely brushed by hand actually!

The charity stuff for kids is great. That's one of the reasons I joined RISAA this year...they are very active in many areas.

Oh, please PM me and I'll send my home address...I didn't want to post it in the thread!

Thanks everyone, we have 9 submissions already - 30% there!

Is the owner of the restaraunt still the woman who would'nt cater to all the workers at NEB for lunch? Man those guys hated her. The old restaraunt used to have some cool pictures of the lagoon back in the old days.

Nope, the new owner also owns Sakonnet Fish Company in Portsmouth...

I've actually had conversations with the new manager about that very subject. They certainly recognize the business value of the area employees for the lunchtime hours...

But I'll pass along the comment, I doubt they know there was any history.

Thanks,

As a followup...

I'll contact everybody to get some additional information in a week or so.

Please pass along any suggestions as to who should benefit from this display once it's run it's course. I'm thinking a local conservation group or local charity. I'd like everybody to have some say in this so I'll make a list of potential groups and we can vote for the benefactor.

Again, thanks for your support

More than 1/2 way there already...

For everyone who's donated a plug to the display. It's shaping up to be a fantastic little collection.

I'm contemplating doing some nice photography of the display and perhaps making prints...it could generate some additional funds for the selected beneficiary, and make for some interesting artwork on it's own

I know there are a lot of colorful plugs out there just itching to get in the case, if you haven't already (and you know who you are) I would really appreciate a single example of your work to help finish the display.

Thanks again...

Are you kidding?

Last fall the cable repair guy was up 20' in his basket wearing a Yankeez hat.

I stood there and heckeled him for 5 minutes

Portsmouth, RI would love a Red Sox plug

thanks,

Just make sure you keep your pinkie on the glass while you have a beer there Yuppie boy...
Actually I'll be a few hundred yards from there all weekend... spring work has begun.....

Are they going to keep doing live music there? My buddy Frank used to gig there occasionally.....

Not sure yet, but I'd venture a guess they will continue to do music. Given the location is a bit off the beaten path the live music does provide a nice draw on the weekends.

A good jazz drummer friend of mine used to gig there quite often as well.

And I don't raise the pinky when drinking beer, I use both hands
