'Funny fish grumpage'

So.. after keeping a small spin rod rigged with a deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& on the boat all summer while fluking and day fishing this year... I went out late afternoon yesterday with the lil woman to try and get some sea bass, weather kept us from fishing (for her) comfortably where I wanted so we ended up scupping up inside a well known cove... I'm trowing plugs at the rocks picking off schoolies when we see fish break way in the distance, no worries I get a rod rigged for bluefish (my 'funny fish' rod is at home mind you)
We slip the anchor and go chase the 'bluefish'... school sounds... we go back to scupping and plugging...
all the sudden 20yds behind the boat a school of Albies comes charging up the cove, breaking and going nuts... and they wanted NOTHING to do of course with my 7" atom popper... oh well blew the one shot I had at em this year... rigged with a deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& and they never showed again.. oh well... screw those things, back to bassing for me!

I feel your pain. What I do now is keep a small plano box loaded with small various metals on the boat all the time stashed away deep. Put a seal on it that says... "open in case of emergency".

As always, Jumpin Minnow....

Perfect for angering friends while you hook up at every school you approach while they catch nothing...

A lot of tasty bonito still around too.

Yup..
I have never made a targeted trip for em, and while they can certainly pull like hell I really dont 'get it' with them. I'm not a big UL or Flyrod guy, but when they pop up that close I like to think I'm prepared... oh well at least the scup and small bass were biting....

My one inshore Bonito catch remains on a chunk while Bluefishing with my father in about 1989.. wire leader and all
BTW I've caught real "Bones" in the tropics on the same wire leader and chunk rig....

I often go out completely prepared for them but assuming I'm going for stripers. Small tunas are often just too unreliable...

But when they're up and in the mood I love it.
