get the smoke out
anyone have any tips or tricks on how to get 20 years of smoke out of the walls floor and ceiling... we are airing out the place now and hoping a fresh coat of paint will aleviate alot of the smell...
we poured baking soda on the rugs... will probably rip them up later but for now they stay.

if your going to paint...make sure you prime everything with something like Zinnser Coverstain to block the nicotine stain, if you dont it will bleed through the latex paint....probaly a good idea to wash it all first too with TSP....that'll rid the smell

TSP
Tri
Sodium
Phosphate
available in any reputable paint store or hardware store.
TSP ... 1st
Oil based primer (Zinnser product) to cover the nicotine and prevent bleeding through ... 2nd
At least 2 coats of quality paint for the final touch ... 3rd
I use only Benjamin Moore products and find them to be the best paint in todays market.
Good luck!

especially
what Swimmer said about what Slingah said!
Adamfishes... you might consider moving just because
of the construction to fix the floor below....
otherwize consider getting an ozone generating air purifier to recycle your air.
the Ozone kills the odor.

Well I found out that it was only one unit that got messed up. Somebody was a bit of an exgarater. My apt smells a lot better today. I'm just glad nobody got hurt.

I had a condo I rented and one tenant was a smoker and the place reeked after he left. The township inspector recommended I get an oder eating spray that hotels use (specifically recommended for smoke). Can't remember the name, but I found it at Home Depot. I just painted the walls with contracter's white and shampooed the carpet with one of those supermarket rentals and sprayed once a day for about a week and the odor was almost unnoticeable.
