VS Casting Question

This year I bought a VS 250 and the 10' 2 pc MH Lami to go along with it - nice rig.

Anyway, I understand that with the handle in a certain position, the spool and roller are in the optimal position for casting. My problem is that this does not necessarily put the swivel in the same position. I like to use a 5-6ft leader, and with a 10' rod, that doesn't leave me much margin for error regarding the length of line from the tip top to the swivel (especially in some spots). The reel wraps about 36 inches per turn, so at first I figured that if I tied the swivel so that it was about a foot from the tip, I'd be fine. The problem is the tension on the retrieve creates a lot of variability. In other words, one retrieve may put the swivel at 8" from the tip, and the next one might either put it inside the tip on 34" away with the spool in the correct position.

Unless someone here has figured this out, I think my only option is to shorten my leaders so I can deal with the the variability, which I would rather not do, especially in the stones.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

If im reading this correctly I think you should have the line on the roller and reel up to where you want the lure/bait at, take the line off the roller and reel (with line off roller) until the spool is at the top then make your cast.

not sure what the problem is. what I do is:
1. position the line where I want it.
2. Take it off the spool.
3. Position the handle so it is pointing 180 degrees from the spool (so the spool is fully extended)

does this help?

Too much analysis...just pull a little line off of the drag if you need.

Fish - that's what I do now; I was hoping there was a better way.

Yeah, that helps because it confirms that I have to do what I didn't want to do. I was hoping there was some trick so I wouldn't have to take the line off the roller and then turn the spool to the correct position.

I was hoping I could cast without looking at the reel, like with my Spheroses.

I'll do that every so often, but only if the spool is really buried in the rotor...otherwise I don't think it's that big of a deal...
