I meant to post this earlier this week but it slipped my mind, if this is any of you, or someone you know, I dont mean any offense by it. Just sharing a story.

Last Friday, around 7pm, I was at Wildwood Outfitters picking up some eels. There were 2 people other than the guy working the counter in the store (downstairs). One was a girl who was talking loudly on a cell phone. Another was a guy purchasing stuff at the counter. Both were early 20s.
The girls conversation on the phone, was “Like totally, we’re going fishing, we got eels and some other stuff……. we are buying these things call korkers…….yeah, you should join us……we’ll be out there tonight………oh, you know where it is, its one of those roads in Narragansett, its called Bass Rock…..its kind of dangerous there…..”

I usually keep to myself, but when I heard that last part. I started pacing and knew I had to say something. I approached the young guy and asked if the girl was with him, she was. I apologized for being nosy, but said I heard her say Bass Rock was “kind of” dangerous. I told him its REALLY dangerous. People die there. I told him I have been surfcasting since I was a kid and usually avoid that spot. He was very nice and listened, but he said that’s why they were buying korkers and that they’re going with someone who fishes there a lot. He said he knows its slippery. I warned him that it’s the waves you need to watch for. I was sort of surprised the guy at the store, who was a few feet away during the conversation didn’t chime in and back me up. It was obvious these kids were not experienced. I felt a little like a nervous old man. I told the kid that I had to say something because if I read in the paper tomorrow that someone was washed away, I’d never forgive myself and warned him again to be careful. Maybe Im getting old, but I was really worried.

poop rock road is really dangerous. it boggles my mind to see families bringing their young kids there to cavort on those slippery rocks right on the precipice of some treacherous water.

Like....first the wave hit him....and then, like......he went under and then like.....he made a few strokes and then like....I thought he was like.....in trouble?! So then I like.....ended my phone call abruptly and then like.....called that 9-1-1 number I hear so much about and they like.....sent a bunch of like....firemen and like.....it was like.....totally dangerous!

They get dunked. They don't go back. One less group of nitwits to deal with. Jimmy you did the right thing but I gave up giving advice years ago...no one listens.

lol at bigfish's post. im 21 and if i ever brought my non-fishing friends they would be drinking heavily. Even after a couple drinks normal rocks turn into death traps. It was a good idea to let them know and hopefully that kid buying eels figures hes better off on a beach somewhere

It was not the best idea on their part, but if they had Korkers, and they were going with someone who was experienced, and it was not 3 days either side of a tropical system, then they did not fit the profile of 90% of the people who have died at the avenues.
They avenues are dangerous, but virtually all the accidents happen a few days before or after a tropical or extra-tropical system passes close enough to kick up the surf. Snip out those events, and the spots become fairly benign.

I don't know very many teenagers [or others] that listen or take advise very well. I guess that they survived. we've probable all been there, done that at some time or other. Human nature.

BRR would probably be pretty safe last night. Its usually after a strong offshore storm when the heave is on that people run into trouble... Hazard ave is the most dangerous... I went in the drink there a few years ago WITH KORKERS

You did the right thing. Its good to warn them about dangerous places. I didn't see anything on the news so I guess he made it out of there.

The bottom line is what you said to them: if you read about it the next day you never get over it. Give the advice, but it is up to others to heed the warning.

Joe and Nebe, this was last Friday and although there were no tropical storms, there was wacky squalls coming through. I was by the water all afternoon and it was sunny one minute, wind, waves and rain another. That can kick up some strange rogue waves.
I just dont think inexperinced people should be fishing off those rocks at night in any condition. IF there friend was truly experienced, I doubt he waould have invited them out there in the first place

so true, I have a hard time thinking of a place to take a friend of mine that wants to try fishing because a lot of the productive places I hit have some element of danger that I wouldn't want to subject him to.
even if he did buy korkers

Yikes. Good on you for warning them, it will stay in their heads when they get out there and maybe back up their intuition that they could be in a dangerous spot.
