Missing kayakers found in Chatham

August 08, 2007
CHATHAM – Two kayakers were found in the fog at the Stage Harbor buoy last night after an intense multi-agency search.
Police were called about the two missing men shortly after 8 p.m., according to a police official.
Fire and police personnel searched the beaches and harbor master and U.S. Coast Guard boats searched the water, Chatham Fire Capt. Matt Flynn said.
A Coast Guard boat found the men at about 10 p.m. and they were safely returned to shore, Chatham harbor master Stuart Smith said.
The men apparently went out fishing and did not have any communications equipment with them, Smith said.
“The report was they were in between Morris Island and Monomoy,” he said.
The concern was that the men would get out into Nantucket Sound before they were found, he said. “It’s tough to find kayaks in the middle of the night in the dark in the fog,” Smith said.

Good health and family

In some dense fog, I've lost my sense of direction on a beach. I can't imagine what it is like in a Kayak at night.

We had a similiar situation with fog down here in NJ the other night..

Me and my buddy were fishing some backbays/waterways in our two-man kayak and another good friend was fishing off his boat about 4 miles away...We had been communicating through out the night and my buddy calls me before daybreak and asks " are you guys alright ?"
I said "what do you mean ?" they were fogged in with zero visibility in a matter or minutes and just barely made their way back to the boat ramp... We had clear skys and no signs off any fog..
It just appreared out of nowhere and was just isolated in that one small spot...

And speaking about Kayaks and safety - we just rigged our yak with some running lights and a bright white light.. We have been encountering too may yahoo's running powerboats reckless at night without lights. And they already came in handy when we were being approached by one of these guys moving hard in the bay - we lighted up and sure enough this guy saw us and slowed down in plenty of time to not swamp us with his wake...

Check it out >

A week ago this past monday, I was out in Boston harbor at night.
By 9:00 pm the fog was building,
By 10:00 pm from my transom, I couldn't see the bow of my boat!
Was going to go out further , anchor up and start chunking.
All I could hear were (BIG & LOUD) fog horns very close to me.
My gps was cutting in and out because the fog was so thick.
I said to Leo, lets head in.
Took me 1 1/2 hrs to get in from Nixes mate to the Town river.(about 5 miles)
Can't imaging doing that on a kayak without electronics.

LETS GO BRANDON
