In Memory of HABS...............
I was responding to a pm from phatybat and he mentioned going fishing in honor of John. Then this kinda cool, kinda crazy image hit me that was inspired ~in part~ by that awesome pic posted by TTimber on another site.
There's gonna be a sheet load of us at John's wake on Wednesday, I would presume. What do you men think of ALL of us going to some nearby stretch of beach from the funeral home, after paying our respects and lining up a safe distance apart from each other and simultaneously making one symbolic CAST in HONOR of Habs ~the Man, the Myth, THE LEGEND?
Sorta like a 21 gun salute Rhody surfcaster style? We could all cast needles (HABS preferrably, or not) and someone who knew him well could say something nice just before the One Big Cast in memorium. I don't even know if such a place exists, but I have the "green light" for the night; so, how hard can it be to pull this off? I plan on getting there sometme between 6 and 7 pm, Wednesday.
Shore would LOVE to be able to see the grin on his face in Heaven when we do this. It just seems like a fitting way to honor his memory, and we seem to pull off our get togethers for BS and beers, why not for something that has meaning and something that would truly commemmorate such a fine friend's sudden and waaay way too early departure from the surf??
Just keep in mind we aren't NECESSARILY going there to catch feesh, though wouldn't that be some sheet iffin a good number of us hooked up??? This one is not so much about the feesh, then again stranger things have happened and wasn't an inordinate portion of John's life dedicated to our beloved quarry and the fooling of them with his lures?
What say you, gents?

On a side note I am thinking about an annual tournament in his name...

John, I was thinking about that also. Like a month long or less. $50 to get in, Biggest Bass wins a Trophy/Hab's Needle, and the rest of the dough goes to Jessica and John, Jr.
Also, since this was such short notice for my previous idea why couldn't we pick a day on a weekend to do the One Big Cast in memorium? The logistics seem overwhelming, but if we set apart a day and a time, then no matter where you were we could all participate, up and down the Striper Coast, in this final sendoff for such a well known and well respected Surfcaster.
Just an idea....................

that's what I was thinking. we could do a plaque or something with names of the winner added every year, don't really need any big prizes. maybe even make it catch and release (photo of lure in the mouth, fish on the tape).

It would be great if we could make it catch & release. Maybe also have a small entree fee and take all the money that is collected and donate it to a charity in Hab's name each year. Maybe friends of Habs could suggest what would be appropriate or a donation to Take a kid fishing or something like that around the holidays would be a possibility?
If we had the buy in of guys here, on SOL and Surf Rats and were able to promote it on each site I think would could have alot of participation.

Put the cash in a College fund for his son....and after his son graduates college, turn it into a scholarship fund.

Sounds cool I am a member of Bassbarn under the same name and I think we can get some others to jump on board too from the site.
