Eeling stick........ - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Looking for advice on a new eeling stick.

I fish the rocks with eels 95% of the time and need a powerful rod to make her turn. Right now I have a Penn Pro Guide 10' and it has served me well but feel as though I might be missing something as far as power goes. Is what I am fishing now ok or should I invest in a better stick. I caught my personal best last sunday night (47" 38lb) and had a bit of trouble turning her. Just worried if a 40-50lber comes my way.

Maybe someone can enlighten me.

I fish eels 95 % of the time as well, and the rod I fish 100% of the time is a 9 ft tica dolphin... medium/heavy. rated 2-6 oz. a super light rod with a lot of heart. I turned and landed a 43.5 # bass this year in heavy surf in a boulder field... you dont need a rod of steel...

Lamiglas 132 3M is my recent favorite for eels - fairly forgiving in the tip and just enough butt to put the boots to a better sized fish

Just snapped one in half and I'm picking up another shortly

Lami 121 3M.....Indestructible and will turn a bus..

Lots of good suggestions here.

Don't overlook the Lami SSU 101 MHS. I'm pretty sure that M&Ds has a few left. The 1205 blank is nice if you're going to go custom, but for an off the rack factory rod, you can't do better than the Lami Super Surf series. The Arra and Surf and Jetty factory rods have crappy guides.

Lami GSB 1201 m if you want graphite. This is what I would get if I were you.

Lami 1213m if you don't mind a heavy rod. Its indestructible and will put the breaks on any bass, but its heavy. I only fish this rod when I know there are some big fish around and that I'm either gonna have to manhandle them to keep them out of structure or when I think I'm going to have to quickly weed through as many smaller fish as possible to get to the big girl.

i drive a camry so i needed a 2 piece rod. Just had a custom built on a Lami CSB1202M. Really tosses eels nicely and has some backbone on her too. If going 1 piece the 1201 is where its at.

that's a nice 2 piece rod, much better for eels than the gsb1202m IMO

i miss mine (snapped fighting a fish, probably was nicked up first)

if you're tossing eels, the lami gsb1201m custom or xs101ms graphite surf & bar factory rod will be great options for eels, if you want 10'. this series is built on a proven and durable blank. if you want a super surf, i'd recomment the M. in glass the sb1213m would be good, as mentioned.

what reel are you using? turning a fish has a lot more to do with your drag pressure. the rod does add power, but is mostly an instrument to get your offiering out to your target prey.

Seems like its going to be a lami, which model I dont know. I will have to go take a look at the diffrent models mentioned and make a choice from there.

I am fishing a Penn Slammer 560 but just ordered a Zee-Bass ZX-25on saturday. So maybe this will help me out turning larger fish? Maybe after getting a lami for the Zee-Bass I will see a big difference?? I hope after spending all thsis folding green!
