Cod Trip Necessities?
As this cod fishing thing will be a whole new world to me, what do I need?
I plan on some foul weather pants, boots, and bundling up with some snowboard gear to keep me warm. So, I'm cool on that front.
I don't have much by the way of cod fishing equipment, and plan on renting their gear. Is there anything else I could bring that would aid me in hauling in big cod? Jigs, teasers, etc? Or should I stick with what they give me?

One word "DRAMAMINE'!!!!!!!!!! I'm not one to get sea sick but I take it just incase. I was out there one day and the seas were pretty rough and i got real sick So needless to say I take one or two just incase because it was a misrible feeling being sick out there all day and not being able to do a thing about it. Better to be safe than sorry ! It's rough out there this time of year.
Good luck to all
Wish I could go!!!!!!

some rigs are nice. mainly bait rigs, most rods the boats rent arent very good to jig with. too short and they have mono. but a jig and some teasers arent a bad idea, just get an 18 oz jig , norweigan or my favorite is this one i have that just looks like a shad. for teasers the 4" soft plastic shad are good mounted on a gamgatsu 7/0 octopus hook. a heavy duty snap is good too. if your going soon say december 1st you might want some neoprene gloves big enough to fit a liner into.

the one thing i couldn't verify is whether or not they allow braided line. i would assume they do, but wanted to be sure.

mates do NOT like super braids, instead of trying to free you when you get stuck with superbraid they tend to just cut you off. Dacron is fine, i like to put on 20 ft of mono leader after the dacron to prevent dacron to dacron tangles.

Dress much warmer than you would think - bring gloves and heat pockets if you got 'em - just in case...

Best thing about the Captn John is the run hot water through the rails to warm your hands!

well, i have a jig master with 80 dacron(overkill) to 20 ft of 80 mono. i meant to get 50, 80 is way too much. the 80 mono i like because i like how many fish it can take before i have to change it. i used 50 mono before and changed it after each trip, with 80 mono leader, i havent changed since early spring. 50 dacron would be best and its really your choice over 50 or 80 mono for leader. i got my info for what to do from an article in on the water magazine, just about every cod article tells you.
