The east wall yesterday afternoon.

A father and older son were fishing way out on the wall towards the end.The father some how slipped or something and went in, he was in for a while before he was brought out by the coast guard. I guess the emt's were doing cpr on the rocks and the way to the ambulance. Not looking good according to my friend who seen the whole thing.Anybody else here about this?

That is sad to hear. I fish there a lot. In the warmer months, I am always shocked to see toddlers with out a parent around, climbing and running all the way out to the end.

When my son was younger, I would make him wear his bike helmet and pfd when he went out there with me. Never took my eyes off him, never let him get more tham 2 feet away from me.

I was out there a few weekends ago. A few college kids were fishing after dark. Not one flashlight amoung them. I made them take my extra.

Ive walked that wall many times and only fished it a handful under ideal circumstances. Its the nastiest jetty i have ever fished. Gotten too wet for my liking. Shocks me that it is so crowded down there. If you are scup fishing it is fine but anything of size creates a real headache. Ive got 2 rocks that are ideal for landing fish, and only fish it when they are accessible. Hope the fella is ok.

I hate to hear stuff like that - but it is a part of what we do.

While not too many of us would have probably been there at that point in time with a swell running and the jetty awash, we all have to admit that we've put ourselves in dicey situations at some point in the past and walked away.

Fishing from rocks in a swell is risky behavior. Even guys who have had plenty of experience and years under their belts have been lost, I know, I've been there to comfort families and survivors after it happened.

When it happens to you, the sheisser goes downhill a whole lot faster than you ever thought it would.

Lately I keep a rescue line in the Jeep with a fish trap buoy tied to the end as a precaution. Coupla weeks ago I saw a nice kayaker's throw-bag for rescues they had at Quaker Lane, next time I'm over that way I'm gonna pick it up, it's small enough and compact, I'll hang it right on my wader belt.

Gotta be careful, gotta be ready - and conditions are gonna be a lot less forgiving as water temps drop.

It would be nice at the more dangerous popular spots along the coast if they had life rings available. Fortunately, some POS would steal them.

I've found myself in harm's way, a few times out there at night. Today, I think of my family, and I'm a bit more sensible out there.

the east wall is one of the most uinderrated spots in RI as far as being dangerous. People who do not respect it WILL get into trouble. I as well as my partner have been BLOWN off it. It really is no place for "amateurs". Especially in a heave.

Jay, you got that right! About 6 years ago I took a nasty spill out there and broke my elbow.

I remember you talking about that steve.I fish there often and almost never see people out there and the few I do see have no respect for the dangers. They try to get out there with no studded footwear.Asking for trouble,one fall out there can be your last.I'am not as afraid about going in the drink as much as falling on the jetty itself. There are some long falls out there.I hope the fellow will be ok.

I'm not exactly careful when I fish for SB, but I don't fish there anymore. It's the most dangerous place I've ever fished as far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather fish Gansett in Teflon coated shoes.

Yep, Point Judith. I've seen people (not fishermen) go way out there with a hurricane swell running and damn near get washed off the jetty. Very dangerous place.

I spoke w/ a guy today over there that said he helped pull the guy out. He said he did some cpr on him as did a doctor that was fishing out there at the time as well. The guy that got in to trouble was a spearfisherman not a guy fishing from the wall.He did not know if the guy made it or not.He did say it did not look good at all.

I can't imaging that somebody would even try to get in the water with those conditions that day,the waves were breaking way over the top of that wall he must have gotten introuble trying to get in.My sister goes back to work at south county tomorrow so i'll try and get some info.

I once swam , fished , sailed and scuba dived in the ocean with no fear at all , even in the worst of conditions. never even considered that something might come up that i couldn't handle. I guess it comes with age but I am now ultra careful. There are many places I will not go to anymore. Heck , I'm even worried about slipping in the shower now!!
