Who lasts longer at surfcasting?

I was thinking about this as I get older and lose some stamina and see the same from some friends as we get up there in age. Of the 2 groups of surfcasters = blue collar workers and white collar workers, which one will last longer as a surfcaster? the guy who works from a desk and may or may not deal with much stress and obviously less physical strain from sitting at a deskjob, or the guy who beats up his body all day and then has to muster the energy to go out and fish?
Maybe the bluecollar worker is in better physical shape because of his job, then again maybe the white collar guy has more in the tank but also is in good shape from fishing so much or having time to go to a gym or something.
Or is it just the same for each, we get old and don't fish as hard as we once did? What do you think.

It depends. White collar guys these days care about their bodies and longevity. I think it's a toss up.

I agree. Work is work and it takes alot out of all of us.

Probably the guy on the sand vs the rocks....a lot of wear and tear on the knees hopping around rocks. and they hurt a hell of a lot more when you fall on them.

I would say White Collar because of a more flexible schedule to see medical professionals. makes it easier to take advantage of things like annual physicals and wellness visits. Since they are salary they have more flexibility to schedule around things.

A blue Collar guy has to be there a set time and is usually paid hourly....so a Doctors appointment usually translates into lost wages so they tend to blow it off until it becomes more serious.

Blue collar or white collar is less important than fat or skinny.
I wrote a poem:

Fat surfcaster and skinny surfcaster to a spot did race
Fat surfcaster fell off the rock and broke his hip, knee and face
Skinny surfcaster stayed and fished in his place

I am somewhere in between Blue/White. I do constructions sales. Somedays I am at a desk all day, somedays I am in the field in boots and hardhat getting dirty. More desk work lately though.

I think it comes down to passion and love of the sport more-so than your job.

I go to the gym 4 days a week, so no matter what I am doing, I am in reasonable shape. Although the winter beer bulge does seem to last further into the spring each year.

As far as stress goes, I work behind a desk and on the road wearing a white collar and I am always under a steady amount of stress at all times. Its getting out in the surf that gets that stress off my shoulders for while.

And for who can last longer it all depends on physical shape. I try to stay pretty active and I think that helps for those mile walks up and down rocks all night. But then again im 27 so that helps too.

I'M a BC worker with a very physical job from time to time,but I have always kicked the weights around trying to think of the Big Picture with life longetivity,I guess I've been fortunate with my overall health and I come to terms that the only hindrance I really suffer from is sleep deprivation which crushes me mentally the physical part....Bring it on!
I truly believe allot of outlasting the other Guys is mental thought kinda like mind over matter

White collar = hobby (spend more on the price of the gear, than on the experience gained by learning from mishaps) fishes more the "easy" way.
Blue collar = obsession (spends more time fishing than money for coffee, gaining more experience than "top of the line" gear.) Tends to know all the rocks on their favorite jetty personally, and at night!

This has been my observation, and by no means is indicative of surfcasters as a whole.

The young "hungries" of either type last the longest - I remember those days and all night jaunts. They make me tired just thinking about them. But I soon learned the best lesson of all as I got older - that lesson is "Knowing when to quit." Sometimes the bass win. Now I just spend the optimum time I can without burning myself out. Still do an all nighter on occasion - but only if conditions dictate.

White collar but have a 15 acre farm so I am always cutting wood, brush, building stone walls, etc. I lasted 40 years in the surf average 100+ nights a year. Still had the stamina till I got cancer then the chemo kicked my butt so I got a boat. I went into remission this Fall so I was back in the surf up to Dec.

I don't think the job as anything to do with it. It's the passion the guy has for the sport that determines how long he lasts....

I agree with steve. How do we know if the white collar worker is in shape or the blue collar worker is? It varies. No way to really tell.

No offense taken, but I think your very wrong. Don't assume that just because someone is "white collar" that they are making any more money than the "blue collar" people.

What you do for work, or how you pay your bills has absolutely nothing to do with how much effort or love you put into fishing.

I'm BC and getting toward 60, I sure need a lot of breaks during my outings these days. I still enjoy and live for the surf, but I'm beat. Still, the few times that I get to see a sunrise on the back beaches is absolutely priceless to me.
In my prime, I fished non stop for days on end, every chance I got.

Red collar or green collar doesn't matter. Its a unique thing for each person. We all get old. Assuming you stay psyched to fish and fish hard when you go , the activity itself keeps you in shape until you turn a corner when do to age and deterioration the activity starts to wear you down. Luck relative to injuries or disease determines how quickly you age in this sport.

I think age and level of fitness is the key. A fresh 20-30 y.o in great shape will outlast a 60 y.o. in great shape. Cant beat father time. Walking 4 miles all night in the sand was never a problem when I was younger now I admit I get tired on the homeward stretch. On the other side of the coin as you get older wiser and more experienced you can reap more success in less time by applying learned lessons and using gained knowledge to compensate for lost stamina.

BUT; in my humble opinion~~~

i think alot of who outlasts who from the physical
side of the equation comes down to DNA/genes.

some bodies are blessed by their ancestors to have the
capacity to stay in good physical conditioning with less efforts
than most of the same size, age, and experiences~~~
regardless the COLOR of their COLLAR,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

when i consider the mental aspects of this sport we love,
DZ and others have summed it up nicely by bringing the
WANT factor into it. ie hungries, and extremists.

i am a Local #7 Union Ironworker. for over twenty years i've been abusing my body against the steel. as i age, i learn more about "working the iron" vs "the iron working me". yet we ALL only have so many reps/casts/rock hops/turns of the wrenches/mental distresses in us before time and nature reduce our capacities to do ANYTHING!!

that being said, i have to WANT it every day to continue in my trade~~~~
my knees, shoulders, elbows, and ankles are turning to junk, relatively speaking. i can still "throw bolts" with the best of them ~young or old; but i believe that my productivity at this stage in life is more based on my DESIRE and my "working smarter, NOT harder" approach that my diminished physical capacities have thrust upon me. don't get me wrong i am still very capable of "gittin' r done",,,,,,,,,,,,i just feeel it more these days,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

imho, this same dynamic applies to the mental side of surfcasting. while it may hurt more and take more out of me physically,
i am MORE driven and am learning to maximize my windows of opportunity, so that i reap the greatest return on my investments of time, energy, family sacrifice, and both the mental and physical stresses that surfcasting requires from us hungries/fish harders.

the fact that i experience this everyday at work, the ability to dig deep and keep digging and finish each day STRONG,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,gives me the wherewithal to "find that place" during each nights haunts. i am also trying to feesh smarter and work the surf, rather than the opposites of both,,,,,,,,,,,,,so my vote is for BC,,,,,,,,,,,all things considered and the above mentioned exceptions applied.

STILL, each night out is a Blessing and i count every striper dawn as joy. since i get sooooooo much more from surfcasting, than it could ever take from me. whether catching or not, the rejuvinative powers (both mentaly and physically) derived from living the nights and dreaming the dreams and chasing the COWS and slamming the surf gives me a solace of mind, body, and spirit that i've yet to find in a various sundry of recreations/sports/hobbies/addictions ~lo these 48 1/2 years.

I LOVE THIS SHEEEEEET, and the same is true for my job!!
i think that it is a pre-requisite for both; irrespective of the collar's color we wear to put bread on the table. as has been said; El Stripera cares NOT what color one's collar is, she's just trying to kick yer adzzz and drop that hook infested eeeeeeeel that you've deeply stuck in her maw.

See, the thing is, as you get older you are supposed to have gotten wiser and learned somethings, like when to be at a certain place and for how long as it corresponds to when fish will be there on a certain stage of the tide.

I used to flail away all night long only to slowly realize the fish show at certain times and tides and it makes no sense to kill yourself once the intel has been learned.

Don't fish hard, fish smart.
