My wife would be complaining (as she is this exact moment while I'm typing this) about the cold. Nice fish!

Paul, tell her she is lucky. You take her to Cali, I take mine to Upstate Ny to play in 33 degree water.

Yep, drove up pretty much for the day on Sat 27th and then drove home Sun morning the flow was too much. Wife wanted to come and it was going to be warm 38 degrees. She wanted a taste and she got it. She saw an empty lodge up there and wanted to buy it. She also had a blast at one of the watering holes with some of the locals so it was a fun trip.

I honestly had so much fun! Standing in that river was insane! I thought I was goin to be swept away at a few points. And damn it was cold...had to get out just to walk around to feel my toes. When I go back up I definitely need neoprenes not breathables!
And it is a when I go back no if!!

I was lucky enough not to get skunked on my first trip...but I want a steelie to take me for a run down that river! My rainbow was a ton of fun to catch...I has actually made my first decent drift down (3rd cast) and she was there. Like TO and Casey said leave it to me to catch the pink fish in the river!!

My husband warned me it was dangerous to start going because you can't stop and it was...I got it...I'm totally hooked. Casey bought me the season fishing license for up there. So excited to go back! Can't wait.

By the way my favorite pic is the one where I am hooked up with a smile across my whole face. It is worth a thousand words and all my feelings of the trip summed up in one moment.

And just a side note for TO.....Altmar and the GILF can't handle me! And I did get my pink Fat Nancy's Sweatshirt on the way home and wore it to work proudly yesterday!!

Neoprene and you'll be cold at the end of the day. Fleece under breathables and make sure your wading boots are'nt too tight. At least that's what works for me. Remember the water is always above freezing. I've had cold feet before when my wading boots were too tight for thick socks.

The only thing I complained about were my toes. Not even my hands with no gloves. I think the guys said the water was 33 degrees!

I had on a thin wicking liner on my feet and then a midweight wool sock and then an ultramax wool sock on top. I have boot foot waders and there was plenty of room but i dont know. I am a cold person anyway.

Next time I know not to ask my husband of the temp outside but the temp of the water! LOL! Plus it was a last minute decision to go up...not prepared at all with any gear. Bought it all for Casey for Christmas, so I just borrowed some of his clothes!

Thanks for the help though!

Pete, some people love their breathables but not me I get cold in them. I bought Cabela's 5.5 1000 gram thinsulate bootfoot neo's specifically for steelhead and can stay in the water all day. One of our group who has been fishing up there for 20 yrs only wears breathables though.

Outstanding Starfish!

On a related note, is there anything sexier than a hot babe with a bent rod?

Great photos, you guys - I love the one in the middle of the first set, can't believe Starfish could be smiling like that in water that cold, but a nice rainbow always helps.

What a woman!

I got my wife a nice 9' surf rod one year when she said she wanted to learn to fish - her 1st day out with me we ran into a all-bass blitz on Ocean Drive that lasted from 6 AM to almost noon - God, I wish I had a camera that day, she must have landed 50 or 75 bass - I finally lost count - and she lost one that bent her rod tip down to the butt. She was using Storm Shads - she calls them 'Gummy Bears'...

No doubt about it, women can fish.

Hey, look at the fine catch she got when she married me...

Anyway, keep the photos coming -

Good luck on your next trip, Starfish - hope you get the steelie of your dreams to run you down the river!

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

If you looked at my wife you would think she couldn't last a minute without the comforts of home but what I love the best is that she can handle pretty much anything. That day we were fishing it was mid 30 degrees and pouring rain and she was right there fishing. I would like to stay at the 1800s house sometime though I have read good things about it. . We have been staying at the Steelhead Lodge. It is cheap 30 a night has a coffee machine and a nice room downstairs with pool table and large flat screen tv. Also stayed at Salmon Heaven Lodge in Altmar. Best thing about getting up there is it costs 20 in gas in my wifes jeep. Lodging and food are all cheap but we always spend a good amount at the bar. We didn't think my wife would like much up there or the people but she can't wait to get back. She had a great time with the locals at the bar too.
