Unhappy Hope None Of You Were Caught In This Fire...

Nightclub fire kills at least 39
Rhode Island concert's pyrotechnics eyed as cause

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island (CNN) --At least 39 people died at a concert late Thursday and others were reported missing after a fire -- apparently ignited by an indoor pyrotechnics display -- destroyed a Providence, Rhode Island-area nightclub, officials said.

Concertgoers inside the packed nightclub fled for their lives, jamming exits as they tried to escape the fast-moving fire.

At least 164 people were injured in the fire and taken to nearby hospitals. Several were flown to the nearest burn centers in Massachusetts.

"Quite a few more" bodies remain in the smoldering ruins of The Station nightclub, said West Warwick Police Chief Peter Rousseau.

Fire investigators were carefully searching the nightclub's ruins to determine how the blaze spread so quickly. Fire officials said the club passed its annual fire inspection.

The fire broke out about 11 p.m. EST at a concert featuring the 1980s metal group Great White, known for its hit song "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." As the band began to play, pyrotechnics went off. But after the display, which lasted for several seconds, flames began to crawl up the club's wall behind the band.

At first, witnesses said, patrons thought the flames were a part of the show and continued to cheer. As the fire spread, some fans casually made their way toward the exit. Then panic broke out, according to videographer Brian Butler, who was taping part of the concert while on assignment for CNN affiliate WPRI.

"It was that fast," Butler said. "As soon as the pyrotechnics stopped, the flame had started on the egg-crate [foam] backing behind the stage, and it just went up the ceiling, and people stood and watched it.

"Some people were already trying to leave, and others were just sitting there going, 'Yeah that's great,' and I remember that statement because I was like, 'This is not great; this is time to leave.' "

As the flames spread inside the one-story club, band members jumped off the stage and joined the crowd, heading toward the exit.

"I just couldn't believe how fast it went up," Great White lead singer Jack Russell told CNN affiliate WCVB. "I'm so saddened it's such a tragedy.

"What do you say? Gee, I'm sorry? That just doesn't cut it," Russell said. "There's no words to express how I feel right now."

Russell said guitarist Ty Longley was missing.

Russell said the band had received permission from the club for the pyrotechnics, but The Station's stage technician, Paul Vanner, said he was not aware that the band planned to use fireworks.

Vanner said the club has had onstage pyrotechnics at past concerts, but there has always been a licensed expert to supervise the fireworks. He said no one was onstage to supervise Thursday night's show.

People on the videotape shot by Butler were screaming "I can't move!" as they tried to flee. Others were stacked on top of each other in the door frame as they tried to exit the nightclub.

One woman who escaped the fire told WPRI that she lived because she fled as soon as the fire began creeping up the wall behind the stage. She said she was in the front of the crowd and thus was able to see the flames.

She speculated that others, farther back in the crowd, apparently were unaware of the fire's seriousness until it was too late.

Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri called the incident a "terrible, terrible tragedy."

Vanner said the club had a crowd capacity of about 400, and he estimated some 300 to 350 attended Thursday night's concert.

"There are going to be all kinds of questions about 'How could this happen?' 'Why did this happen?' 'How was this allowed to occur?' " Carcieri told Providence's WJAR-TV. "The fire marshal says it was not permitted. So why did this go on?"

Three days ago, 21 people died and more than 50 were injured in a stampede at a Chicago, Illinois, nightclub after a security guard used pepper spray to break up a fight.

Videographer Butler was at The Station nightclub to cover local perspective on that deadly stampede.

The worst nightclub fire in U.S. history occurred November 28, 1942, at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, Massachusetts. That inferno, fed by decorations in the ritzy nightspot, left 492 people dead.

I'm still in mild shock after hearing the news and seeing some of the footage as I was leaving for work. It also sounds like the death count would be higher too...

Say a prayer for the families, there will be much grieving from this one.

Unhappy

I saw the report on the news before I went to bed last night, from what I saw the flames engulfed that place very fast. The black smoke inside and the panic must have made it a friggin nightmare to get out of there.

Terrible news to say the least. Just awful

My Stepson's dad was one of the lucky ones to have escaped the fire. He is a concert promoter, and was caught up in the events of last night's fire.

It's been a long evening for us, before we found out that he was
only mildly injured.

What a horrible tragedy!

...we headed up to Warwick last night ...wasn't sure where we were going....the "Station" was one of the suggestions...THANK GOD WE CHOSE A DIFFERENT ESTABLISHMENT!!

...we saw all the ambulances/firetrucks rushing around but HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON!!!

After seeing the video clip of the show, . . . . how could they have possibly thought they could set off those pyrotechnics in that place???

My prayers go out to the families and victims of this horrific tragedy.

...it finally happened, there are no more secret spots

Along with family and friends of these poor unfortunate souls please remember the Public Safety workers in your thoughts and prayers.
Those guys and gals on the front line will have to deal with the horrific scene in their minds for the rest of their lives. Kudos to the Fire Chief who has relieved the first run Co. of duty pending Incident Stress Debriefing.
May the Almighty grant strength and inner peace to all the victims, family, friends and those involved in this sad chapter of their lives.

Why is a has been group using pryotechnics?

I heard on the radio that the club owner in New Jersey where Great White played last week, said they used pyrotechnics without permission in that show.

God bless all the families involved in this tragedy.

that's what i was saying--- they don't sound like the type of music that would use that stuff either..

Aside from some of the humor I feel in other threads this is not a humorous day for me and a lot of the people in my neighborhood. I'm recent to the Warwick area but there will be too many people from my neighborhood and like Matoonoc, I'm not looking forward to the list of names or the final count when this is all over.

How can a facility with a bar or grille NOT have a sprinker/fire supression system and how can an area or state building code NOT have a provision for some sort of fire supression system? That is unbelievable!

I worked the door & very occasionally the bar at 2 Boston clubs with max cap far less than 400 and they both had sprinkler systems.

I don't see how a sprinkler system could have prevented what happened there last night but it may have bought time and probably would have saved lives!

I'm with you John.

A few years back I used to work as a nightclub disc jockey (a/k/a the "weewee mix show" ) in a number of East Coast cities.

Some of the older establishments were truly scary to work in - decrepit wood structures, huge intoxicated crowds with impaired judgement and no inhibitions, lots of smoking (=flames) going on - and the owners would often chain the fire doors to keep people out. Add to this the cover charge - $$$ - there was no incentive to keep occupancy at a safe and manageable level.

Looking back, and reading about recent events in Chicago and Warwick, I'm glad that all I ever suffered was partial deafness from repeated exposure to loud music.

Something is fishy here.....

Place is capable of holding 300 people.

"At least 187 people were injured and taken to hospitals across the region for treatment of smoke inhalation and severe burns"

"Gov. Don Carcieri said Friday at least 86 people were killed when fire swept through a West Warwick nightclub at the start of a concert"

That 273 people. 27 more and they are over the limit. Seems like someone is going to have some explaining to do.

What a tragic day in America.

My Stepson's dad isn't out of the woods yet.

He helped to rescue the band & people through a window and got some cuts to his hands. He was covered with skin and blood and has been tested for HIV. He will also have to wait six months to be re-tested.

He is pretty traumatized right now.
