Jr. Scientist
Ty got a microscope for christmas and has been begging to get it out. Promised him this week we would get out to the stream and collect some samples, check them out under the scope then tie up some fly patterns to mimic what we find. Of course we had to bring a pole as well. First cast for the boy and he gets the first river fish of the year, a native brookie and then we were off to collect some samples.

We collected rocks and sediment into our basins then slowly sifted through it. Most of the rocks had numerous Caddis Larva and Cases.

It was all fun but it was really cool seeing the caddis magnified. Kids were a little freaked but it was fun.
The last pic you can see the abdomen on the scope.

Bill, not sure it is a midge either. Has more leggs appendeges on its abdomen. Looking up midge I found a May Fly Larva as well which looks a lot like the nymph we think of as Stone.

The tail is wet. It had 3 antennae on it. Looks like a March Brown Nymph.

The other one seriously looks like a Drake Nymph. Comparing the striations on the back abdomen to the picture here.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Too bad schools now frown on bringing outside info into the schools for showing. I thought it would be a cool project for my son to bring to school but they have sent home papers in the past saying not to do that. He was very proud of his little collection. Now to get tying.
