Jamestown Bridge Projects

There is a meeting tonight where the Gov will tell of his plans for the Jamestown Bridge. Remember in his "State of the Sate" address when he said he was going to get rid of it?

Well, there has been talk for years where they will make part of it a fishing pier but what to do with the rest? Well, scuttlebutt has talk of several (maybe as many as 5) Artificial Reef projects - thats the good news. Wanna know the bad news? We might end up paying for it - us Anglers! Could the dust have barley settled and we're now battling Rhody License Initiative part Deaux? We'll find out tonight.

Remember, money was put in the general fund to take down the bridge but they already spent that (long gone), now we may need to pay again (someone will have to as it is a hazzard to navigation)...

So, the meeting is tonight. I had planned to go to see what they have to say but my wife has to work so I'm home. Anyone else that can go, should go as this will be a big item. Sorta Quonset meets the Rhody Rec License (OK, it might not be that bad) but someone needs to go...

Thanks,

John

Question

Are there ever any lights on any part of that bridge at night?

Would be nice to have a shadowline.

Fishing Piers can be profitable, tourist-attracting enterprises. North Carolina and Florida have some good ones that are well run – but the state of RI can’t seem to find success where other states have.
Rather than fishing license, I’d prefer that the pier be privatized and a concession sold for small bait shop on it, or nearby. Dedicated monies end up in the general fund the first time there is a shortfall – if you don’t believe me just ask Mr. Romney. If you charge a fee to either access the pier or park – you will keep out the worst element.
Local residents are among the most hostile towards public access and no doubt will use what happened on the pier before, with the littering, etc, as the ammo to shoot down any proposal. One wonders if they allowed that to happen early on in order to provide that excuse? At any rate, regardless of what is said today, I’d be very surprised if a fishing pier ever becomes a reality.
