Here is all I know for anyone who wants to make some



You can see the original which is all brass hangers and thru wire which is threaded in rear with 2 nuts. I did one that way out of stainless, which was a bear. Then I figured out a way to wrap the tail and also you can see another way Capesams showed me using stainless bike spoke which has the nut type screw in the back. I did have to make the little thingy that the flap tail attaches too to make it hang down lower but that piece makes a world of difference in the plug than using a swivel like most modern day guys use. It had a very small tail wgt. in the rear which believe it or not was just plain steel, not lead.

I use lead for tail wgt. Like I said you will have to craft the thing that hangs down. Can be done several ways. Goo goo man, Glenn, did some with a piece of stock and 2 holes recessed into the back of plug like Pt Jude surf slapper. Do a search for it. Worth a look. Probably be the easiest way. I did it the way it was done cause that is how i like to do it and this is a Lido not a Pt Jude. But for just making one that functions that would probably be your easiest way if you don't want to go thru too much trouble. Not that Glenn's was easy, he did a fantastic job. His tail wrap is on front of plug with bike spoke style too.

I recently did some that I up sized , a lot. Look forward to fishing these next year. Look at post #28 in below thread if you have interest. I am also working on a few other type of flap plugs this winter just for the fun of it. Now get going.

I think they made another version, Paul.
I have this body which seems to be maple and is unweighted. It also had a tail threaded thru wire. I think I recall Peter having some better examples.
I planned to copy it last year, but doing so didn't feel right at that time.

I don't think Peter has any other ones G. I think he only had the one I borrowed but I hope I am wrong. That is cool though. I made one out of mahogany but it did not work as easily as the ayc one.

Spent the early part of yesterday searching for info on the Flaptail, found your earlier thread and did a drawing. Then look again when I'm done and here's what I need!! Well turned one this morning and came out good until............I broke the drill bit off while doing the front hole... hate to waste a nice piece of AYC!

ProfessorM was kind enough to post his diagram for the Flaptail so I asked if it would be alright to reproduce it so that others would be able to print it out and turn out some baits during the off season. If you have a photoediting program you can resize it to make the diagram any size you like. Again Thanks to ProfessorM!!

Has anyone used a die to thread the tail end of a std thru wire and then placed one or 2 SS nuts on the arse end. That seems to me to be easier than the bicycle spoke method.

yup. I threaded a 1/16 308 stainless thru wire. Original used brass and a larger size probably 2-56 if I had to guess. You will be going with an 0-80 thread and let me tell you it isn't easy. First you have to file down the outside dia. of the wire to about .056 as that is the major dia.that is needed to get the die on without breaking the wire. Leaving it .062 will not work. You have to thread it about 1/2 inch long. I also made the nuts too. You can buy them but they are really too small IMO. A lot of work but I enjoy that stuff. I found that you can do a pretty good tail wrap if you think about it and much easier for the mechanically non inclined. YOu can see my attempt at the threaded and the tail wrap in the pic above I posted.

Here are a couple of photos of my dad Bill's attempt at Flaptails in process (He now has a S-B log on as Plugbillder so he can see pictures etc.). Thanks to Blackjack and Professor M for the background I used in the photos and the dimensions of lures. He still has screws in the eyeholes and straws covering the bottom swivels which he does when spray painting. Between the diagrams and pictures and discussion I picked up on this thread and me giving him directions over the phone or by email this is where he has progressed on these. We decided the easiest way for us to attach the flap is using an additional loop in rear below the body. Now we have to figure out how to attach the flap to the loop.

Turn your screw eye 90 degrees. Get some small washers from Moore's or Stamina. Bend wire to shape. Works better than a swivel (which fouls). ProfM's basic idea.

Does the flap tail blade flutter / flap or does it spin? Based on it's shape it looks like it should flutter or "flap" like a tail , but the wiring detail shows it attached in such a manner that it could spin. If I had water I would test it but the tub is not long enough and my dad's pool has the cover (and a foot of snow) on it.

I am really looking forward to swimming the flaptail (and the flap on a darter as well).

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Both. It spins, but it will randomly fly out of the water and flap down on the surface as it does so.

Thanks guys. I enjoyed learning about flaptails last year when I looked into them. I fish a Lido Paul gave me. Really, really sweet plug.
