The old deck that will be removed this spring caused the floor problems in the previous photo's, I cleared the snow and ice and blew a couple of holes through the decking so the ice would build again on the surface leading to water downstairs (flashing must have failed).

i have pics, but I'm not posting them. too embarrassing that I let it get this bad.
It started with a one week procrastination on gutter clean out. With the amount of trees (oak) surrounding my house I have to clean gutter 4x per year. the last cleanout is usually around 1st week of dec. Well, i set up the ladder, and got my supplies, but something came up and I didn't end up doing it, and they have pretty much been frozen solid ever since. There have been other winters where I left a few leaves in there, and it has never amounted to anything, so I figured it was no big deal... wrong... I did not realize what was going on in the back of my house until it was too late. I have been chipping, nylon salting, and this weekend i will break out all tools necessary to stop this mess. luckily the leaks are confined to a small area of my living room, but still it can't be good for my house...

I taped plastic to the windows so it would funnel the water into a bucket, I'll deal with the damage after the thaw. I'm going to look into getting a Interlock metal roof. Has anyone got one?
I am also debating getting those rain deflector things (forgot the name) that look like louvers and eliminate the gutters altogether.

Gutter Guards? I don't have but a neighbor does: they too grow plenty of LONG icicles!

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

It's going to be a good year for roofer$.
ecduzitgood, my roof looks just like yours, but on a white house. I just painted the living room and ceiling, if water starts pouring in I'm going to puke.

Has anyone seen them on a house?

Not that this will help Gloucester, but if you get a leak in the ceiling, drive a nail or screw into the spot where you first see the water. Open the hole up a little bit and leave the nail there. You want to attract all the water to one spot so you can control/catch it, and to keep it from running all over the upperside of the ceiling.

When I buy a house, I will be putting those roof wires on the Northern Side of the roof. Seems like everyone I talk to is having water problems and it's only going to get worse after the melt/rain this weekend.

[QUOTE=ecduzitgood;834031]How bad does your house look:
Ed I have a couple of questions,
Do you have soffit vents?
Do you have good access to your attic?
How much time do you have?
Can you take some pictures of the attic where the roof meets the joists?

HOLY MOLY yesterday we knocked easy 500 lbs of icicles off the house. I got ice dams easy 6" tall. Going to have a problem soon if it rains. Can't get a ladder up there right now. I chiseled out a bit behind the ice dam with the snow rake. Barely long enough. That's a workout! Roads were a skating rink this morning.
The plow guy took down a icicle Friday that shook the ground when it landed from 8' up at the shop.

I'm getting the heater tape installed on the northern sides of my house and running it through all the gutters.

Another kick in the shorts
Yesterday most of the remaining ice dam came down on the 4 season room and only caused one leak. Today what remained came down and shattered one panel and we have a new leak

Damn. I'm sorry to hear that. Talked with my neighbor yesterday... every interior wall on the front side of his house has to be ripped out - both floors. I think it was mid-day Saturday that all hell broke loose and really quickly from what he says.
Talked with a good friend who is a roofer... they are booked straight through July. He said this is the first time in years that they have had to turn away work.
