when do they show up off rhoddy and what are some ways to target them? never caught one and they look like lite tackle fun

I've caught them in the tropics on generic bait- squid, clam, etc. But the easiest way is with a spear...

Saw a few in RI while spearfishing for tog a couple years ago- I think it was around August.

Delicious fish, just do yourself a favor and only use a serrated fillet knife on them. Really tough skin!

Usually around Mid July...

Target them with small bucktails tipped with squid or fluke belly strips...

I've caught them fishing for fluke...

I've tried to just target them but never happened.. always caught them by surprise... you will know when one hits when your bouncing for fluke...

tasty on the grill... brush with a little mayo first meat is a neutral in taste, I found them not to hold well at all in the freezer.

I've only caught them on accident while targeting other bottom fish. Squid or clam strips.

I've caught them off pt Jude and quonny and a few other spots in soco.

Think there tough to target.

mostly when scupping / I do catch them way up in the bay as well as @ the mouth of the bay ;;

Generally a by-catch when scupping for me. The only way I have found to target them is with a speargun.

Ive caught them in Ma by accident while fishing for scup, but twice last year we had them behind the boat on chum. Both times we cleaned em up and both times their was only 6 or 8 of em. This was off the vinyard and last year was probably the most i've seen in a single year. The chum was home made with crabs, clams, sand, and bait fish all ground up. I've caught them this way in Fl as well so im guessing if you can find them they should react everytime the same way......Good luck hope that helps

used to catch them all the time as bycatch bottom fishing in FL. Any kind of cut bait will work. Up here, I'd look for flotsam and toss small cut bait like mac or dines around it. You never know what will swim out from under it. To find them up here in the open water, you gotta be one lucky dude or put in a crap load of time or both!
