Late night stickups of fisherman???

Heard some ugly stories of surf buds getting held up late at night around the southshore area. Guys threatning to shoot people if they don't hand over their wallet,watch,rod... bad enough with the breakins down the canal in the wee hours..I fish late at night alot when there is really no one around and this concerns me..anyone else hear anything??

Eventually these dirtbags will F with the wrong guy(s) and get their heads kicked in.
Hopefully that will just happen - nobody will know but them and we'll (and the cops) never hear about it...

I wondered about this same thing as I was getting ready to go out last evening on the south shore. To carry or not to carry?? If someone asks me to give them my wallet they will surely be surprised to see what comes out of my waders....... Eventually they will ask the wrong guy to hand over his things.

Where else have you guys heard of this happening recently?

Might be time to start listing some generic places where this is happening and more buddy system. I have some places I love to fish solo and some places I love to fish solo but am wary of thugs.

I agree!

Where are some of these places?

I haven't been doing well this year in my standard spots and am going to start trying some new spots. I don't want my greeting to be 3 random guys who try and take all my stuff.

carry one of those small super bright led flash lights. I have one that fits in palm of my hand with 21 leds on it. Its like a spot light, the temp blindness followed by the the beat down he'll get with me swinging a club and an igloo ice chest will probably mess up his evening.

Sounds like I'll be expediting my search for carry weapon. I got licensed earlier this year but haven't bought anything yet. The misses has been apprehensive as to her comfort level of a gun in the house but when she reads about this crap and the incidents of people getting robbed in areas I work, the more comfortable she gets with the idea.

Just curious about the length of time from placing your application with the police dept to getting your LTC permit.I placed mine the last week of April and am still waiting for the call from the PD.The detective said appx 40 days.Is it working days or calendar days?

I heard there have been some problems around Braintree/Quincy area. The problems down the canal have been going on for sometime now.Breakins to vehicles and bullying by some drunks and such..There have been some pretty hammered guys fishing down there lately roaming the service road at like 2-3am. Guy offered me some free bait one night and said I would have to follow him to his car to get it a few weeks back..I declined thinking nothing of it, now I wonder what he was up to..I was alone..

lol. I thought it had to be a stick up. I'm 5' 6'', 155 and 53 years old and I figure if I just hand it over I'll live to fish another day. My days of handing out ass kickings end when I out grew beating on my sisters.

Lol, good one Paul.

I cant see my self getting into a fight with a couple of guys. I would do all i could to avoid/deescalate the situation. I cant see something like that happening with just one person trying to mug you of your gear.

Everything is better on the rocks.

A married man's wallet has his driver's license and that's about it...Paul's plug bag on the other hand....

I would reach into my surf bag, pull out my bucktails, and let them have it!

This is bad news. I usually fish alone, but will keep this mugging thing in mind. No need for this kind of problem.

Be encouraging, not discouraging

The Deputy Chief here couldn't have been easier to deal with and assured me that he'd put my application into the state that day I met with him, as long as my background check came up clean. My application went in March 17 and I had my license in-hand mid-late April. He told me, "The state has been really slow lately. If you don't have your license within 6 weeks, give me a call and I'll check with the state."

According to the MA licensing process, the state is supposed to have the applications processed and the license in the mail within 40 days but those who make the rules are allowed to break them.

If I were you, I'd check in with the person who took your application and I'd be calling the state.

I heard of one story of this in Quincy and the story sounded a bit off.
Who are these people telling you this and where did it happen? Did it happen to them or they knew someone , who knew someone, who knew someone?

Don't forget to put the water in...

There was an article in the Patriot Ledger a couple of weeks ago about a fisherman who got mugged near the CVS on the Southern Artery in Quincy.
