I was driving over the newport bridge around 8:40 this morning and saw the Coast Guard coming under the bridge from the newport station... I didnt think anything of it..... such a shame.

Potters cove is the cove that is right next to the toll plaza at the base of the newport bridge.

It was gusting 20+ due north this AM. not a pretty place to be w/ that wind in I'm guessing a small boat....

likely a preventable tragedy...

The one I heard about was 3 guys in an inflatable. 2 guys swam in but one stayed with the boat and was rescued (I thought rescued) later. maybe I heard wrong or its a different incident.

I saw some footage on TV. Showed a non-inflatable and said it was an 18' boat. Think they had footage of it floating over-turned.

Kev, you are right. 18' fiberglass. 2 swam for shore and one stayed with the boat. One of the swimmers died.

No boat, back in the suds.

That is a little cove, lots of traffic going by. Life jackets would have probably saved them all.
