Wading boots question

I want to buy some breathable hip boots and also get wading boots for them since I feel I will have better support for my size 14 gunboats. I want them for places like Cuttyhunk and the canal where alot of standing and walking on rocks will be going on, as I already have a pair of bootfoot waders for the beach.

I can't decide whether I want felt soles or the lug soles.

Slip I got the felt sole and like them. They give some extra traction on rocks.

Korkers my friend.And yes its spelled with a K.They're like sandals that go over your wading boots.Kinda like cleats with replaceable spikes.

Really? Kinda like cleats? - Yeh, I agree, the most important rock hopping item since the foot... Hodgman just came out with an interesting set, kinda a cross between a K5000 & 1000 for less dough...

Slip, get the felts. They'll offer you additional limitied traction and then slip the Korkers (with a "K" ) over the top for the rough stuff. Also that they are a bit lighter than the lug soles probably makes up for any traction issues on the harsh sand of Nausuckakruketucket Beach hehehehe

I know some of you guys frown on ORVIS but I really like my Convertible boots. The soles are interchangeable between an all felt, felt with carbide studs and rubber w/ studs.

They are very light and come with that schweet ORVIS warrantee!


Oh yeah, I put the plain felt soles on when I wear korkers.

I don`t fish the canal much Slip...at least not yet anyway but straight felt soles don`t cut it on heavily weeded rocks or the mud/slime that the tides leave on the rocks along the canal.

Korkers over felt soles sounds like the best deal going.

OK, thanks. I know what Korkers are and I have some for places that I need them like Watch Hill or Beavertail Light, but I don't need korkers at the canal and the Hunk has those places where it is covered with softball to football size rounded rocks so there it is just tough on the feet not slippery.

I don't frown on Orvis, in fact I have a new pair of breathable waders with bootfoot felt soles for the beach, I was just abusing them last week on some rocks because it was too warm for the rubber waders.

I may just have to go with the felt bottoms.
If I didn't have 47 bucks saved up as Cabelas bucks from their credit card and a $50 gift cert. , I wouldn't be buying anything, but since it may only cost me about 25 bucks out of pocket, I can get them both(the hippers and boots)

And John, they may be lighter when dry but how about after they get saturated with water?

Mike, on the rare occasions I am fishing those rockweed places, I just sit on my but and slide down to the water, I wouldn't count on Korkers on that stuff, also I don't fish on slimy rocks at the canal so the felt will be fine.

Slip - I had the felt sole/lug sole dilemma a few years ago.....I finally went with the felt, mostly because the ones I wanted with the lugs only came in camo, so I went with the felt to get the plain brown.

The debate was whether the felt held sand and got heavy. I have not experienced that, and am happy I went with the felt.

Of course, sooner or later the felt needs to be replaced, especially if your spots require walking on asphalt a lot to get to them (like the Service Road....)......if the waders don't end up leaking bad enough first that Aqua Seal won't fix them, and I fear I'm getting to that point....had a VERY wet foot wading in Barneget Bay a few weeks ago ....

I hear it's not too tough to replace the felt.....hardest part is getting the old felt off, but we'll see when and if the time comes....

I'm getting to like my felt soled Orvis bootfoots. They're good on dry or wet rocks, as long as the felt isn't all covered with sand or loose dirt. On really snotty rock, I'd still want some sort of studded soles.

And don't forget the most importen item; WADING BELT!!!!

Slip,, i have found that some cheep work boots from wal mart work great. I don't bother to rince them out or anything,,, and i get plenty of support from them. Try it ,you might like it, and they are cheep

For Breathables Orvis
as for hip boots in the canal I where my Firefighting hip boots with a steel toe and shank and thick linning

but the proline hip boots work great too
