Cod Fishing Report 2.16

The Island Current out of Snug Harbor had about 30 fisherman for the day. Weather was perfect and seas were FAC. Waters started to get a little sloppy late afternoon. Hopefully Toby adds his views as we were on opposite sides of the boat.

There were lots of fish boated (my estimate is >50) and as usual you were either in a hot spot or cold. I was more cold but did pull up quite a few junk fish. The dawgs are still persistent at all/most drops. Most fish taken on bait, very few on jigs. Bites mainly on the lower hook (double hooks) and most rigs only single low circle hook setup.

Cod were mostly on the small size, just at limit 22" to maybe 26-28". Not sure which fish won the pool. The big ones reported over the weekend could not be found. Several people went home with some pretty good bags of fillets.

One spot yielded quite a few red hake. Other species boated: fluke, sea bass, and even one scup!

Quite a few CF as lines got tangled.

Capt Chris and crew did their best to keep us on fish. Started anchored for about 3 hrs but slow fishing. Did some drifts better. Quite a few "CF" as lines got tangled. Moved closer to Block where the big fish were caught over the weekend, nothing. Moved back out for several more drifts and anchors. Seems like the bite was immediate upon hitting a new location and if you didn't hookup in the first few minutes the spot went cold. No amount of chumming the waters drew in more fish.

PS this was actually one of my better head boat trips: no gear malfunctions and did at least boat a cod rather than going home empty handed as in the last 2 trips.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

Water temps are in the mid-40's.

Saw lots of gannets diving. The trawlers were working south of Block, one pair setup. Saw in the distance on pod of breaking dolphin, maybe tuna?
