Looks like the new device just enables/interfaces your smartphone/iPad device to send the standard Spot-type messages. No longer need to use the actual Spot receiver to to it. It says something like the 14 pre-saved messages plus location can be sent to up to 10 people. Tis will not enable phone calls, txt messaging, etc.

Christian and I have the first generation Spot. Not a lot of functions but it does provide a lot of peace of mind when Christian is pushing the envelope with our 20 footer. At the very least it gived you the last known position.
