What do you have, Don?
I have a service contract with Terminex, which I am satisfied with. But would bet I would see signs of termites before the lad they recently sent out.

Whack the suspicious spots with the head of a screwdriver and see if there is sawdust

easy to spot little piles of saw dust
but look in the surrounding area's for dead tree stumps
because they start there and then move\fly over to houses.

I think that those are powder post beetles or something like that - we had them at my parents house. The beetle eggs were in the wood for 25+ years before they came out. If I remember correctly, to get rid of them the exterminator had to bomb the house a couple of times. Are you sure that they just in that one place/board? Remove/replace may be the way to go, especially if it is an inconspicuous area. We had them in hardwood floors throughout the house, but they would just be in one board here and there.

What he said, mud tunnels. ome in through a crack in foundation and head for the 2 x 4's. Take a pencil or a nail, or as in my case kick the wall gently and watch the pine 2 x 4's tuurn to dust.
Called a small guy and they just can't offer the 5 year guarantee that Terminex can. They had to come back once after the initial visit and foundation soaking because his drill bit didn't reach a depth that penetrated footing under front steps. When he came back the second time he did thre whole foundation for me again. The troughs that he dug were still there anyways. Besides that the poor kid didn't even have a belt or a decent pair of work boots, and I gave him both. Kid was dirt poor. Haven't had a problem since and they come back every spring.
Its nothing you do. The little bastages come in from outside in the ground. Travel to and fro until they carry the poison back to the nest and whammo. I think there are pine tree burried out front somewhere.

Those look like they were there before the board was planed, probably before it was kiln dried also. Termites and other wood eating critters don't make half tunnels.
