eel- contnuing education

ok- so I've spent some time fishing snakes this Fall with some decent results.... now just got a few questions (if anyone can help)

hooks- whaddya like? I've been using Mustad live bait hooks, and have gut-hooked more fish than I like to admit. are circles an option? and how long do ya wait (if yer using a J-hook) before ya set the hook? seems like I get bit, and then hang on for 3-4 seconds until I set the hook..... too long?

thanks again-

bob

I never like using circles much for eeling.

I use the Mustad Big Gun live bait hooks in 7/0 or 8/0 for most of my eeling. After the initial bump I lower the rod while reeling in any slack and then set right up on the fish. I would say the whole motion takes a second or maybe two, waiting 3-4 seconds just gives them more time to swallow the eel resulting in more gut hookings.

I love the Gamakatsu 5/0 live bait hook. Small, yet strong and sharp as hell. Like JLH, I do not let the fish run, but instead lower the rod and wait for the line to tighten. The fish basically hooks itself, and I never get throat hookups. 90% are in the corner of the mouth. I tried circles back when I first began using eels but found the live bait hooks a better choice after they were recommended to me. Been using them religiously for over 6 years.

I use the same hook in 7/0.... fortunately most fish have been "big enough" that I can reach my hand inside and remove it from the fish's gullet...........
