My Little Spook A "Hunt for Cowtober story" - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Today's "hunt for Cowtober" story :

After a frustrating afternoon with getting the wife's car to a mechanic, i decided i would try my luck at a day time bite. looking at the tide charts i knew i would a small window before slack if i put the hammer down, so i did.

I decided to fish a spot that i had never fished before. In recent scouting's i found a nice little peaceful stretch of shore line that looked welcoming, but weather and wind conditions did it have it in the cards till today.

i arrived at the spot with about an hour and a half before slack, the winds were howling, switching from the West to the South West then back to the West. The sea was angry today my friends except for this nice little spot and what a bonus not one other person as far as the eye could see!

I decided not to suit up as i had never fished this area and wasn't sure if i was going to stay. Instead would just grab my trusty rod and reel and my personal made plugs and head on down the rocks in my sneakers. Sheltered from the wind it was a nice and cozy kind of warm spot, i took a moment to look around and enjoy a spectacular fall day and be thankful to mother nature for sharing such an amazing piece of beauty.

First plug i pull out of my bag was a never fished before prototype spook i made last winter out of some scrap wood. Here we go first cast, ripped into a good one, this little spook soared like a Bald Eagle stuck in the trade winds. As the plug went higher and higher in the air rising just above the protective grounds behind me, i thought to myself "wow is this ever going to land?" When it finally ran out of steam the little 1.25 oz spook landed about 125 yards or so out.

For those of you who have tried to walk the dog with a spook you know that working a spook is not easy thing, let alone a prototype, but this one had something special on it, Swish, Swoop, Swoop, Swish. The plug had the swagger of an ballet dancer, i worked it a little hard and i could hear it screaming for more, and more, so i put some more rod to it, and it frolicked like a new born deer learning to walk and run.

About a quarter of the way into my retrieve. i noticed the water in the front and to the left of the plug start to look funny. That water looks nervous i thought to myself, but not wanting to over work the plug with my right hand starting to tighten and my left starting crank on the handle a little faster, i took a deep breath and back off, Swish swish swish, oh there it is i thought to myself you got it now kid! Steady as she goes wait for it, wait for it.

Then out of know where the water turned into a boil. Not just any boil but one from a witches brew you would see on TV. My heart jumped in my throat my palms sweaty and in a brief instance BAM! Thrash! I"m tight! ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! YEAH BOY! i felt like a little kid catching a blue gill for the first time, i could feel the smile on my face from ear to ear, but the focus and concentration was spot on.

As for the fish, this wasn't the cow i was looking for, but i would be damn if i was going to tell him that. If you had asked him, he would have thought he was a 50#er or a 60#er, this little devil meant business.

He raced back and fourth in the rocks like hes done this everyday of his life, fighting for survival, trying to rub himself free from the 60# fluorocarbon line, and 50# Suffix Braided line on the boulders. This went on for a short time when the little fella got all tuckered out and finally came to shore.

I gently unhooked him, gave him a kiss on the head, said thank you as i set him free, only to enjoy several more hours of blitzing fish on my little spook.

Its fair to say that i have FFF (fall fishing fever), and i like it, but WOW what a day.
