Sharks and other strange stuff

I was out eeling off of Block Islands South Shore..Black Rock and in the rips there was hundreds of dogfish at the surface. This was before sundown. The fish were just slowly crusing with their fins sticking above the surface. At first I thought that it was going to be one hell of a great night for stripers. But they all turned out to be dogs. Has anyone seen this before or can you explain what the sharks were doing. The other thing was that I caught a striper with an umbrella rig in his jaw, what are the odds of that?
Finally a bluefish jumped into my boat and said hello. Then I knew it was time to go home.

Duke,
Around this time of year they come into the shallow water to drop their pups.

I have been out on the back beach before and on several occasions seen the same thing at day break. They are cruising along with their dorsal fins out of the water, almost like they are strain feeding like a whale. I have also seen they ride in on the waves and float back like stripers often do. Weird.
