Skishing Custom Rod
Hi Guys,
Any recommendations on a skishing rod? The main thing that comes to mind is a short but. I welcome your valued feedback.

i would think a noodle or fly rod with a bait caster would be the way to go. Purely speculation but sounds good
|

Did I fish with you after a S-B cookout at Plum Island a few years ago?

Just use a standard surf rod length should not be an issue. If you want I can give you Jake Freeman's e mail. He is more experienced than many on the subject. Just not all that active on the interwebs. He used a 12 ft afaw and an xsra1321 also when floating. He paired with a zx22

jonserfish, interesting idea. But, personally, I like something with a little more backbone to turn a fish while bobing in the ocean. ;-).

I have already tried Google; it was not that helpful. :-(. But, I will keep trying.
I have Paul M's book. If my memory serves, he does not discuss gear.

I know others have made it to television etc. But I know he has a ton of time floating. Not sure how much time he has spent in the water recently but in two years he probably spent as much time floating as the others combined.

I always thought that a ROD similar to the Fenwick
(i think it's Fenwick if my memory serves me)
would be the Steel head rod for both Skishing
and more specifically a shorter rod for Kayaking.
I'd be interested in hearing Opinions on that "IDEA"

Paul M uses a GSB1321M, I'm sure the 120M and the 108M would be fine.

Not sure a shorter rod will work. You're low in the water so you'd want a little length to the rod to keep leader and payload clear of the water to get a cast off.
Fish360, try calling Paulie's in Montauk and see if you can't get a hold of Melnyk, and get his take on it.

Jake Freeman's blog suggest a 10' or 11' rod rated for 1 - 4 oz.
I am leaning toward a 10'6", to be honest.
I will reach out to Paul Melnyk.

If you're going custom, you can have the rod built with however short a butt section you want.
