I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it was a sustenance fisherman who wasn't expecting these conditions. Very sad..

Not that it can't happen to an experienced fisherman (like Gary Mathias a Middletown surfcaster at Sachuest Point a few years back) but the subsistance fishermen generally have no concept of swells, tides, slick rocks, etc - they are very suceptible to these accidents. These areas adjacent to deep water are so dangerous.
Very sad.

The tricky thing about the Tail and other deep water spots is that you have to figure out how the waves rush up the surface of slick rocks. Sometimes the waves that don't appear as big as the others will catch you off guard and take out your knees. Without studs you don't stand a chance from going down...

I hadnt seen at swell on the reef like that in a while this morning. I cant believe that someone drove in the BT parking lot and decided to venture down and fish.

Brenton Reef was huge as was everything in front. Got as far as just past the Castle Hill Light and made a u turn.
I too heard the call by the CG and then heard it cancelled. I assumed the guy got rescued. I didn't realize he died.
BB, good meeting up today. Bout time!

Is this the same one that's posted as Hull Cove on the other site?
I've fished there in somewhat big surf and it's the waves that wash up behind you and catch your legs on the way out that are scary. But when it looks dangerous, it is and I just watch.

I would assume the same - had not seen anything other than Beavertail but I have been away from my computer all day.
Not to diminish anyone dying buy I would think Hull Cove is more likely a surfcaster than sustenance fisherman, just by raw numbers and ease of access. Have certainly seen all types all over that place.

it's so deceiving
i remember being rolled up the bottom like a ball
then i got straight but the wave SOOO strong
pushed me hard and ground my chest flesh off ....
i staggered up the Beach vowing never to underestimate
the sheer power mother nature and it's waves have ever again.
sad news indeed

So true... at least a couple times a season a wave will remind me of how powerful the ocean is, and how quickly things can go wrong.
Tragic end, very sad. T&P's to his family.

probably Lion's Head. The sweep going around that point has dropped a couple people on here into the water there. Needless to say they were lucky to get out. That spot is mostly dominated by subsistence fishermen now, though...

I was at beavertail light this evening with my family, and what do i see? 2 guys and a girl pencil popping in flip flops very close to the big surf...
these were people that seemed to know better (surfcasters who werent fully geared up and jumped down to cast a bit) but man... even my 5 year old said it was a foolish thing to do, especially on a day that someone lost their life.

Very sad to hear this
It's easy to sometimes be complacent and have a close call or worse.
I won't fish there without an inflatable, and even then korkers are no sure thing to keep from getting swept off.

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.
1984 was a warning, not a guidebook!
It's time more people spoke up with the truth. Every time we let a leftist lie go uncorrected, the commies get stronger.
