S-B results at the Derby

Very early, but SurfPirate is leading the boat bonita division....
Danno also has the first boat Grand Slam as well!

Couple of nice shore bass weighed in this morning.

Dave Peros wrote a nice brief history of the derby on saltycape.c om

The Derby is a major reason why I fish the Surf as are the authors and stories shared of fishing the island. It took me since 2001 of fishing MV til last fall to enter for my first derby pin. I didn't enter anything, caught some fish and had a great time with some good friends.

Good luck to those that can get out there.

Ok, so Jim Wareing, my son Anthony and I head over late last Saturday to fish opening day. We do well in Lobsterville, each of us getting an Albie and missing/dropping several others. I need to leave that morning to get the boy to hockey and feel pretty good about our start. Jim stays until Thursday and for Zilch. Ouch.

Jim and I head back this past Sunday night, fish all night in the rocks for a total of 3 short hits and a chop on eels(big moon, no overcast, weathermen suck). I leave and the next night Jim has 2 mid 30" fish in a 10 min stretch over a 3+ hr night in the rocks. Last night, I take the late ferry over and fish one of my favorite rockpiles for 2 plus hrs of prime time for 1 short hit(I think it was a seabass). After that, we head to Edgartown to find some bait. Ended up with a dozen squid and 8 butters but also livelined some adult pogies that were in thick and being molested. No takers at the wharf so headed to South. Had a bunch of good hits before sun-up but only managed a small doggie to the beach. Then slid down the Wasque and practiced casting at Albies for an hour before heading home.

So, the bottom line is that it has been a typically HORRIBLE start to the derby. Every year I say the Bass fishing can't possibly get worse, and yet it does. The Albies bailed us out the last 2 years and I still have hopes that they will this year.

There is one big difference though this year - My body HURTS! My hips ache, my casting shoulder crackles, my stamina(and will to fish) just isn't there like it used to be. Turned fitty last December - starting to think that these allnighters plus may better be left for the young studs.

Note to self - bring extra bottle of ibuprofen for first week of October.

Saw Rick Hern weighed in a fish a couple days ago.

Lev's kid just weighed in a 36.42 shore bass in the junior shore division. Pretty good stuff considering the all tackle shore division leader is 28.56........ That family knows how to fish!

They just updated it and Westley is now listed as the overall shore leader, as he should be.

I hope that fish holds. Spielberg was wise to shelf the rights to The Big One. This could be the end of the movie writing itself. Shore bass to boot! Not quite the same as trolling around all day like the Kadison and Warburton kids, not that I'm knocking them; lifetime family memories happening there..

I see him in jr boat but not shore, but I think that is a different fish only 18 something. Maybe he entered it into the adult category for a shot at a bigger prize?

It was 36 something, and grand leader until today, but under division leaders it was previously listed under the juniors, not the all-tackle leaders... hmmm

Leadbelly would have been discovered at weigh in inspection as a new leader. But something fishy is up with that entry..... I do recall seeing a single comment questioning the fish's legitimacy among all the congratulatory comments..... The sad part is that I can't think this was instigated by a kid/junior angler...

My only guess is that he cracked during the interrogation and admitted "someone" heaved a chunk out for him. I hope I'm wrong.

When a kid that age "catches" a fish that big......I have my doubts they actually did everything from cast to bring the fish to hand themselves. Not a fan of tournaments anyway......always someone willing to cheat!!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Sounds like the "issue" may be with landing the fish.

Here's one for ya Larry.

Thanks for all the kind words, yes, I was very lucky at this years Derby. Aside of temporary fame leading for a few days, I found out that a lady did a painting featuring the filet table on a night I volunteered.

Pretty cool stuff, I will try to post it later.

the full moon looks orange sometimes when it rises because the light has to pass through more of the atmosphere then when the moon is higher in the sky. the blue light waves scatter but the red light waves pass through...... if you were wondering.

His father helped him land it. Hooked it on the Coast Guard dock, and played it for an hour or more. Around pilings, biats moorings, all initially thought by himsel, but soneone had it all on an Iphone. The boy still received some prizes for legally caught fish in the junior category.

My fish held on for 2nd overall, 1st seniors( I guess thats good), and heaviest of the week, two bags of goodies, and a beautiful rod and reel from Penn. Books to read and gift certificates. Not the real prize though. Blessed to have been able to drive Chappy every morning and say hello to all the deer. Plugged every morning trying for big bass, but that did not happen. Caught some blues, and I prayed for a bonito to be on the hook.
