Absolutely no excuse. Charter boat at fault. No one could have been at the helm and not seen the sailboat. Still, it is surprising that the sailboat did not even take last second evasive action to turn away. T bone is hard to explain.... Fortunate no one was hurt.

Charter capt obviously at fault and no way could have been at the helm. But this comment cracked me up.

OK, I get it the blowboats have tne ROW. That being said, the captain of the blowboat caught quite a bit of liability for the crash when he made the statement that has already been quited above, above seeing the motorboat on a collision course from quite a distance away. Any prudent person would gave altered there course at that point.

No offense taken but as a seasoned life long blowboater , here’s my take.
If I’m sailing in Newport, on any given day I have at least 5 to 20 incidents where a motor boat is headed right at me. It’s always between ft Adams and hammer smith farm or between rose island and Jamestown. I see them and I hold my course with the logic that if I change my course it could confuse them. By this, I mean if a boat is 100 yards away and bearing down on me... the real Aholes will slightly alter course and wake me.. never will they alter their speed or do anything to show any consideration to the epic waves some of them throw. That said I’d never let one ram me like this guy did. My logo is if I can see someone driving, they can see me, but if I can’t see anyone I will definitely make a last minute course change. It’s just common sense.

I see very small chop (little wind to support quick turns) in the picture so tacking that sailboat in a last minute attempt could have resulted in a crash if the idiot not driving the charter snapped out of it and turned suddenly at the closing moments.

I understand a hobies not wanting to take a wake,they are small. But a special type of pansy expects that type of consideration with a decent vessel under foot. It would create a real mess in those waters too,kind of like the driver who goes 60mph in the left lane.(no offense to Nebe)

Had some asswipe almost torpedo us while on the ball tuna fishing.
Guess he was on autopilot, couldn’t see anyone at the helm. Either having a Shlitz out back or down below taking a dump.

FWIW, the rules of the road require the vessel that has the right of way to maintain course and speed. Of course that doesn't apply if a collision is imminent. |
