Adirondack Fishing on the Racquette River
Just got back from our annual trek to the Saranac lake area... for years we would do the 7 carries ... remote small ponds around St Regis pond... but the trout fishing went downhill so we have been fishing the Racquette river above Axton's landing and going in on a thursday on Mothers day or the weekend after to avoid the black flies. There is a sweet lean-to just below the falls section and we put a nice kitchen on the lean to 4 yrs ago from a derelict dock that went thru the falls. This year we had our best fishing yet even with water levels that were very high... between 8 guys we caught Northerns up to 30 inches, Walleye up to 25 inches, LM bass up to 16 inches, SM bass up to 15 inches, brook trout and splake (NTS hatchery cross of lake trout/brookie). There is a trout pond about a 20 minute walk from the falls.
Great trip with excellent food and plenty of fireside drinking... My Armenian bud Hugh V.cooked us a lamb feast on Friday night that was unreal.
It is a looong drive up there so I suggest you should stay for at least 3 nights. It gets busy in the summer so I suggest fall fishing to avoid the bugs and the crowds.
