How about the caption that has always been used to describe the photograph that the statue was copied from?
"Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" Rosenthal's photo won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography, the only photograph to win the prize in the same year it was taken.
The inscription on the staue made by copying the picture reads:
"Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue."
6800 Americans killed. 27 Medals of Honor awarded for actions during this single battle..
99 percent of all Japanese solders on the island (about 22,000 dead-about 200 survivors) were killed or committed suicide during this first battle ever fought by Americans on Japanese Homeland Soil
Of the 6 men pictured in the flag raising , 3 died later during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
