free handing...

I can't remember what it's called, but as a kid, my brother and used to go to this small creek about a mile from the house in upstate New York and we'd catch small brook trout with our hands. They'd be tucked up under the overhang of the creek bank and you used to be able to gently slide your hand under them and grab them or ideally get a finger under their gill cover plate and flip them out of the water.

And this fall, I actually caught a Bluefish with my hands. They were busting bait on the shore and a wave carried the bait and the blues past me up on to the beach and when the skinny water receeded, a nice fat blue came wiggling by and I grabbed him by the tail! He was invited home for dinner....

Kite fishing has always intrigued me. When you think about it, it sounds like the most realistic way possible to fish bait on the surface.

You forgot live-lining herring with baloons

Sandman, my Dad used to bow hunt for carp in Ct. When the carp would spawn, they roll on the surface and he would shoot them with a bow fitted with line and a reel.

FWW, the answer is yes, you CAN do it all. Its just that work gets in the way!

that is fun! i used to do that on the westfield river from a canoe. you can sneak right up on them. if you master shooting carp, move on to suckers. now those are tough! since they sit on the bottom, you have to learn to account for the distortion of the water's surface. freakin' frustratin'!!!
