Pikie prototype

After the plugfest, I came home determined to take a pass at a pikie. This one is 8" long and about 4 oz. "undressed". I'm showing where I'm thinking of locating hooks and a small . 2 oz. lead plug. Hooks are 2/0. They look small, maybe 3/0?

For a plug that large go with a 4/0 hook minimun. placement looks OK depending on what you use for a lip. One more thing, please don't take this as judgemental is the rear of the plug bigger than the front? This will also affect on how the plug swims. It will detract from the movement but will add to its throwing capabilities.

plug size

It's ever so slightly bigger at the back end. Don't hold back on the comments. That's how I'm going to learn. I do have some concerns about the lip and whether what I have is big enough.
I guess I'll know that when I put it in the water. Sounds like I need to order bigger hooks, too.

Going back to the profile of the plug. Should a pikie be uniform in diameter, or slightly bigger in the front. How does the altering of the profile affect the way it will swim?

Should have the maximum diameter at the shoulders (right behind the face cut). On the one you show, I would taper the back some more. For example, on the giant pikie clone below (also 8 inches), at the front hook it is 1.4 inches in diameter. At the rear hook it is 1.32 inches. Tail is 0.72 inches. I used a Moores Lures Pikie lip for this one. The photo shows a single hook at the rear. I've since changed that out to a treble. 4/0 trebles all around. Hope that helps.

leave the plag the way it is and swim it.
You have just came apon How to make a pike dig and have the tail stay up. just watch the roll in the plug.
The best way to learn is to make a set of plugs
and learn the theary of types of action and how to go about achieving that action.
then You may want to move along to weighting and hook placement.
