If you're going to fish the Providence River I suggest you go early in the morning on a Saturday or Sunday.... when the odds of coming up a loser in "smash my windows roulette" are greater.
Car window smashers are usually fast asleep about two hours after sunrise. I've fished there a few times, there are fish there to be sure, but I prefer to spend my free time in a nice place.

I used to get cabin fever and be one of those early season hungries. No more. Given a choice, I'd rather stay home and read than go fishing for schoolies.

Thanks, Joe, I'll be looking forward to the articles - I read alot in the winter. I was watching the Weather Channel this AM and they said to expect at least another couple of weeks of much below average temps and snow

I always said if you find yourself in Providence in January fishing for holdovers you should seek professional help.

Even Uncle Crafty's Tackle Den in the basement is cold, which is never the case, being near to a big old cast iron coal- burning furnace that was converted to oil.

Yup, I can hear the furnace kicking again...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

Soon Toby... Soon.....

Actually I was planning on trying that sometime in mid march..

Eben, if you start knitting I'm gonna come smash some glass,

And dont feel too bad for me, I'll be in Key west from Thursday night through Monday night
Not much fishing, but at least ONE day and a few sunrise trips to the inlets/bridges... hey gotta do what I know!!!

And Joe I'm with you, not into freezing to catch schoolies... even they deserve an offseason, I'll catch em in May!

RIRH- i usually make a few late winter early spring trips. no success yet, but it always freezes some sense back into me! there is nothing quite as calming as standing on the end of a b'way in march on a new moon night.
