9 ft plugging rod advice?

I'm looking to get a new 9' spinning rod for plugging and eeling this year. I currently have a Fenwick which I'm happy with but I kind of want to treat myself to something nicer and use the Fenwick as a backup. The thing is I'm looking for a rod rated for 1-4 oz. since I usually use plugs from 7/8 to 3 oz. I was looking at the Lamiglass rods (Ron Arra and Surf and Jetty) and they are all rated 1-3 oz. I'm just looking for some advice/comments on whether the Lami tends to overrate the lure range on their rods and what other quality options exist besides the Lamis. I would also consider going the custom route but I am not really sure how to go about doing that and the cost involved. Thanks for any help and sorry that this isn't the most interesting topic.

Allstar Breakaway LDFS 9'-6"/2 is also a good choice for a good price. It's rated for 1-3 oz but will handle more.

If your talking the 1083 it's way over rated and the 1084 there is little differance from the Rainshadow 1088 .
And the 1088 costs less than 1/2 of the XRA.

Allstar 1145/2 is great for what you want. The arra 1083 is too light but the Lami GSB 1083 will do fine too , maybe a little shy of 3 OZ. . For a one piece , the Allstar 1087 would be really good. Lots of rods for 1 to 3.

Best all around rod for 3/4 to 3 is the allstar 1265/2. However , its a 10.5 footer.

There are a lot of blanks and it can be very confusing as the ratings rarely make any sense.

Find a well respected custom rod builder and they will make sure you get what you want as a reasonable price. The guys on this site can help you locate one. From what I've seen, cost is about what you would pay for a nice factory rod, but it will likely be built better and to your specs if you so desire.

i friggin love my 9ft G-Loomis, but it may be a little light for you, its rated 1/2 to 3oz. but with their warranty you really can't go wrong.

I would go with either the Rainshadow 1088 or the Allstar 1088. In my opinion the Allstar is a little underrated as compared to the Rainshadow, meaning that the Allstar can actually handle a heavier plug then it's rated for. You could have either of these blanks made up for less than what a Lami 1083 or 1084 would cost.

The All Stars are about a number up from the Batsons. So an All Star 1088 is more like the Batson 1089. I have the BGSW1088 and it ain't for throwing a 1 ounce plug.

I think Mike was right on with the Batson 1088.

Rainshadow 1087 for plugs up to 21/2 to 2 3/4oz with agreat sweet spot of 1 1/2 to 2oz and 1088 for anything heavier.
Like Mike said 1/2 the cost of a XRA1084 and just as good.

Allstar.. Newelly got / had one ... Big Dave turned me onto it ..Daves says don't throw 4 to often... I need lots more pennies .. if i didn't make plugs I could buy 5 of them..

What gives is about 29 inches down from the tip

I will say that IMO, the 1088 Batson is the best bang for the buxk all around surf stick in 9 footers. Yes, there are nicer ones but not for the money. Moving upscale a little those 10.5 Allstars are nice.

I have a 1088 Allstar and love it. I've thrown 5oz jigs with it down the canal a couple times. Loves big plugs. Forget Bombers though.

Some of the sponsors here wrap rods and can you get you squared away with a rod made for you.

Thanks for the input guys. It sounds like the batson 1088 may be the way to go. Can anyone suggest a maker in the boston, ma area. I am not in the market yet but hopefully it won't be two long. Also, an estimate of cost would be great (i know it varies with components but just an estimate). Again, thanks alot for all the feedback.

Thanks. I was thinking about it and realized that I forgot to say that I will need a 2 piece rod since I live in the city in a relatively small apartment and have nowhere to put a 9' rod. Does that make it more difficult to get a custom made or is it pretty common to get 2 piece custon rods?

A 2 piece should be no problem, although your choice of blanks may differ slightly. This also gives you the option of going a little bit longer if necessary.

saltheart made me an awesome allstar breakaway 9'6 custom, if u have the $$$ i wuld definetly get this rod, its for the same purpose, eeling and plugging, mines matched up with a 706Z and 30# fireline, its crazily great from what ive seen in the backyard, dying to test it out when the stripies arive.
