I think it's time for you to go find out on your own instead of searching the web for easy answers.

I already have 2 solid spots for all these species. Just curious when they show and leave and maybe another spot or two closer to narragansett to find them.

CHef the mackeral move around fast. When they show up try coves that are facing the wind direction.

you can always tell when the squid are in town when the little bridge in newport is stained black

No where on this side to get squid or mack eben? I killed the macks on the little bridge last november, every cast 5 fish, only took 5 casts. Took them to work, a little extra virgin olive oil, garlic, seal salt , pepper and a squeeze of lemon-slamming!!! I never thought they were any good to eat other then smoked but they were great, and im not a big fish eater.

I've jigged 'em on both sides of the pond, but had better catches later in the fall. East passage is where it's at, with a handful of good "lights" in the West passage.

Ever since they fixed the dock area....they don't have as many lights on. Ya still hear the splishy splash of the attacking bass.......but it was alot better with the lights on the water. Now you almost gotta jump into one the boats to fish from......

O.K., when the time comes we'll have a squddin party on the state pier. I'll bring a genset or two and some 500 watt lights and we'll light up the water like times square on new year's eve. Then we can break out the brew and wait for the squid to arrive.

The fisherman of Eastern Rhody would appreciate their spots not being put on the world wide web. Private messages would be kinder

Basswipe no one said they were secret spots the point is not to make the place anymore popular. There are hundreds of people just cruising the net everyday, they never post only read. Most of the people that fish those spots now probably heard about it from a B&T, local newspaper or fishing periodical's report, or by word of mouth. Now you have people reading the board that did not know about the place, and they are going to want to go there. You think it was crowded last year, wait till this year if you keep posting the spots in very public forums. I don't fish there so I could care less, but you or your fellow Rhode Islanders may not be too happy.

I agree with Specialist. Respect the local knowledge, and the locals. If I were to plan a trip that way, I would probably PM a few members for their suggestions. With a post, you're inviting non-locals to take a road trip to your favorite well known spot, that otherwise would not have even been considered for such a trip. Just my 2 cents, especially with cabin fever still killing us.

I once made the mistake of mentioning where I was having luck and with what tackle and low and behold I came back to the place and there was 10 guys fishing there with the same plug.. I walked by them all thinking 'wow these guys got the right idea!' it wasnt until i started fishing that it dawned upon me that I had just posted what I was up to I was just thankful that i didn't mention what side of the spot I was on, or that would have really got me fumming.

I caught fish last night in providence, but I'm not going to say exactly where I was in providence.......learned my lesson last year

In years past ( maybe 10 ) you could go the the cause way or state pier in Newport and see at most 20 people going after squid and never had a problem with anyone. Now if you go to the state pier DEM or Newport police will throw you out as soon as they see you and the cause way is just down right dangerous to fish from. Why you ask because people with loose lips sink ships. Being a fron Portsmouth I know of other spots to go for squid and would not take anyone to them. So when you ask me where I get mine Well I get them in Newport you go figure it out the same way that I did, go for a ride and look around, try new spots, do some scouting, look at charts and for the sake of us all be selective in how you tell someone where you go, a full page ad in the USA Today is not the best way.

Thank you
KL

Basswipe I like how you get defensive and want to change the subject when you're called out on doing a stupid thing (Naming spots on the world wide web). 10 years ago there were problems, how about last year or the year before when guys were getting their stuff stolen. There are problems every year. Like the other guy said, the fisherman of our Island don't even fish the causeway but when someone starts advertising a spot to people who are'nt in the know, things change and when the Causeway gets shut down they start coming around to my spots or my buddy's spots and then you're not gonna have too many happy people who have fished an area all their lives only to be dogged by someone who wanted to chat on the internet. As far as it's not the spot but what lure you use. I agree somewhat but with squid IT IS THE SPOT because of the scenario I just gave. People from NY, Jersey and Mass come for weeks just for squid. They make a mess, steal things and most don't even spend money in the local economy. I understand most guys in this forum are good guys but as was stated before, some people just surf for information. Look, the squid run is as Newport as Newport gets. I see guys there I have'nt seen all winter and I probablly won't see all season. So don't ruin a good thing because the people from NY, Jersey and Mass have already been trying.

You mean I haven't succeeded yet? ...dang, and I been trying REEL hard too.

My .02 -
We lost left side access years back, and I can see us losing right side access SOON. There are many factors that work against that spot.

#1. This is Newport we're talking about here, so as a whole...I believe the community DOES NOT like seeing large fishing crowds. For one, the more people you have, the more likely you'll have litterers mixed in. I think the large crowd is a strong factor...to most residents, it's UGLY all by itself.

#2. The fact that the majority of the squidders are not residents of Newport. This is also a BIG deal in their eyes. If we're NOT there to spend money, then we're just there to make it ugly...so GET OUT!!

#3. Squid!!...Unfortunately, most people don't wait for the volcano to ERUPT,...so the end result is....a VERY DIRTY looking bridge with Ink EVERYWHERE. This is a very sore sight indeed...and with this bridge being a "tourist" attraction...(not the bridge, but taking a leisurely stroll on it)...it definately makes things difficult on the fisherperson and even worse for the bridge. It don't rain enough to keep it clean.

#4. Parking!...when the squid are present, Parking is rediculous...doubleparking, taking 2 spaces, parking in Non-parking areas, people asleep in their cars waiting for the "wake up call" because the squid have arrived. Yes, this is also a big problem. Families will stay a week at a time just waiting for that right moment when they show up, they even use large generators in the cove to attract the squid. ...all this adds up. This also wears the residents thin.

#5. Walking in the street while cars are passing. I see ALOT of fisherpeople who think they have the right of way, instead of waiting for the car to pass...they try to beat the car to the punch. I've seen many tangles due to this...and even injuries.

I'm surprised people are still allowed to fish it, to be honest with ya...especially with the new project just about completed. There are many places to find squid in the Bay....you just need to try. Some places are better than others sure, but if your just looking for a meal...or a few bait-bags...or fresh bait for the following day, you can stay away from the crowds and do just fine. I have to agree with you though, there are many lurkers looking for a free ride...and some of those lurkers are irresponsible, litter-bugs and law-breakers. I don't think PMs are the best way, because you really never know WHO your telling. Best thing is, if you think someone knows alot about something you want to learn or try, Pm them to arrange a get-together. If when you meet them, you belive them to be honest, law-abiding and sincere folk...then give them some memories to remember. If you think they're NOT, then take them to Newport Beach and try squidding from the surf for a few hours and tell them...."don't worry, the squid will show up sooner or later"..."and don't worry, you can still catch squid with all that weed on the jig"...

...it finally happened, there are no more secret spots

First Basswipe I think I've kept to the thread. We're talking about squid and you had to bring up spots, which I thought was not the thing to do on the web. I was basically saying as someone who comes from a certain area not to mention spots from that area. Secondly I've never had anything stolen fishing during the squid run. I was refering to the commercial fisherman that get things pilfered every year. Lastly the out of towner thing is valid. As I see it the majority of people who fish the Causeway are not from Rhody nevermind Newport. When things get stolen or trashed I'm going to blame the people I see there every day and night. Not everyone from Mass, NY or NJ litters or steals, probably not the people on this site from those states, but the ones at the Causeway from NY,NJ and Mass do. There is no anger here. The point is you should'nt have mentioned specific spots on the internet and when they close the Causeway and the masses come to your "Secret Spot" don't complain.

hey chip, take a break. you have made the same attacks on non newport residents or non RI residents on another site and it is the same story with you here. I'm sure you know the saying "if you don't have anything good to say then don't say anything at all". and I gotta say if that was the case then we wouldn't be seeing too many posts from you.

Is it good, or is it Sofa King good?

Basswipe your a clown. Your from Portsmouth so you know the situation down in Newport in the Spring. If your from Portsmouth and you only know two spots to get squid, like you said before, there's only a few places to squid, the Causeway and your secret spot, then your definitely a clown. I bet you race across the Causeway Bridge real fast with your NASCAR stickers. I thought I'd get that one in.

Yeah I have had this argument before over the litter thing and out of towners. I'm sorry if you think it's negative. I don't mean to be against guys from Mass, NY and NJ on this site. I don't think that guys on this site from those areas are the people who litter and poach. The people on this site care very much about the sport and the impact people have on the environment. I don't post much, but I do post when I see people post spots on the Internet, especially if those areas are from where I fish. I don't think that is too respectful of the fisherman of the said area. To be able to talk about fishing all winter long is great, but I think that naming spots is just irresponsible.
