for really light stuff(less than 1 or 1 1/4 oz) buy an Abu 6500. For heavy stuff an Abu 7000 or 7000C3. If you don't mind leveling the line yourself maybe a Penn 525 mag. The Penn has a very fast retrieve which might be handy jigging the canal.

I would go with the Abu 7000. The penn mag will be too fast for a beginner IMHO

The Penn 525Mag is a little bigger in spool size than an Abu 6500. It has monster gears I think 5:1 or 6:1 ratio and casts really nice. No levelwind though, you gotta level it yerself.

is that what they call the penn speedmaster?
think the drag could take a couple sm. sharks and an occasional school tuna.
thanks for the help.
