RHODY LEG of SB TOurney!!!

OK - for the Rhody leg coming up this weekend. We have excellent tides & weather conditions projected for this weekend!!! Near Rhody Surfcaster's dream conditions: High tides between just before 10PM ('Gansett) and 10:45 (Watch Hill), daytime temps of high 70s and nightime of mid 60s, projected winds out of the SW in the teens and not muggy, all on the backside of the full moon!!! ( http://www.weather.com/weather/local/02813?y=11&x=4 ) Pretty stinkin' good conditions!

The main meet will be say at 6 pm at Weekapaug B&T in Westerly for burgers 'n dogs and breaking off into groups as well as stocking up on necessary schtuff (Don - call me tonight when it's convenient for you to go over some details, thanks ). I really do plan to do some scouting on Friday night as well as get what's hot from Don...

Don, you & John can take some people with you when you fish?

Anyone else like to take some people along? I have a few coming along with me at this time. We certainly don't want to overwhelm an area and with all of the spots from Narragansett to Watch Hill, there really is no need to...

This looks to be a very exciting leg with a great opportunity to put some nice fish (released :P ) up on the board...

Any questions or comments??

Thank you all,

John

I still feel like I'm recovering from a sleep deprived weekend, so I'm passing because it's too close and I need my beauty sleep . My right wrist and elbow are still aching, not used to 2 days of back to back jerkbaiting ouch. Not only that, I've got to inch my way out of the doghouse slowly so I can get out again Saturday. I hope you all have fun, I'll catch you the next time around hopefully.

John I am going to try to make it down on saturday. Iwould like to fish eels, and I am not very skilled at it, it would be nice if I could hook up with someone who is fishing eels so I could learn a little or alot. I won't be staying very late as I have a charter at 5am sunday. I have no custom rods, only store boughts, I have 2 10' uglies and an 8' ugly. Which should I bring the 8", 10' or 1 of each. The 2 ten foots have Shimano baitrunners, but I could move 1 baitrunner to the 8', I was going to do that sunday am anyway.

Specialist - bring both of the rods, those reels will work well too. No problem on using/learning eels as there will be numerous people at the tourney that can show what eel fishing is all about. It really is very simple provided you follow a few key steps:

Keep the eel from wrapping around yuor line because if it wraps around your hook or leader, you're all done. The best way to do that is to slow the eel down by leaving on a bed of ice (which must be continously drained or the eels will drown in their own slime) which slows the eel down significantly and the other option is to stun it by wacking the TAIL (not the head) on a rock or something sturdy a few times.

When casted, be sure to maintain light contact via the line to the eel all of the time. A very slow retrieve will do just that and keep the eel looking as natural as possible which is what you want to do.

Fish the eel very slowly - sometimes the hardest thing to do but the most important.

When a bass hits the eel - you'll feel it (usually a quick bump bump) immediately drop your rod tip towards the water (with a conventional you might give it a few seconds in freespool) start to reel in and once tight, set the hook (non circle hooks) - that happens over a very short period of time. If using circle hooks, drop the rod tip, pause a second and start reeling in and the hook (at least it's supposed to) will set itself...

Don is taking a few people to a couple semi-secret spots :P and it sounds like Korkers may be in order if you have a set... There are also a couple other locals down there that will be available too...

Here are the directions to Weekapaug.

From Route 95 south or north exit 92, right at the end of the ramp, east on Route 2 away from the casino(no stopping there hehehehe). Follow about 1 mile right onto Route 78 to RI beaches. At the end go left onto Route 1. Follow to Dunn Corners go right at the Mobil gas station (map enclosed).

People coming from the north are better off heading to Route 1 when coming out of Warwick this is a left lane exit John can help with that exit.

From Route 1 south bound follow Dunn Corners, left at the Mobil station.

secret spots hmmmmmmm and eels and korkers hmmmmm sounds interesting ! and there are fish in RI ? Right ?

Specialist bring what ever you have . I still use an 8 ft ugly stick too. its all about what works for you personally and financially . Eels are real easy to deal with as John said . he gave you all the info needed . I hook them thru the bottom jaw and out one of the eyes . I fish painfully slow and keep my eels iced down . I have a 3 bucket system that works great , I can show you on saturday .

John, can I bring any food or something to help out at the Q? I'll pack my waders AND hip boots this time.

The least we can do is help out bringing some food, since you already go out of your way to bring us this website.

Hey MikeP, you coming or what?Just hop on the ferry and skeedadle over.

I have been keeping the eels iced down and fishing them ssslllllooooowwwww, and some times you get a bump bump every 5 or 10 secs and I give it slack and nothing. I guess they are just dragging bottom. Any way I will bring my waders but unfortunately I do not have korkers. I will try and find some, but I am on a tight budget as there has'nt been much ot at work lately. See you all saturday, by the what is the ETA from Quincy to Weekapaug any how?

Good luck to you all. I'm taking a day to be by myself Saturday, no wife, no kids, no guests, no nothing, just me and the fishies . I've got eels, but will look to upgrade to some mack when the sun comes up, then just drag bait and cast my plastic. I'm actually looking forward to a big unwind, good luck and I'll be thinking about you.

GS - good luck on Saturday, gonna try that spot again :P

Specialist, it's roughly 95 miles to Weekapaug from Quincy. It's definitely worth it too. I was heading there almost once per weekend when I was living in Braintree up until this winter when I moved to Lil Rhody...

Well there are several ledges he "owns" ('cause he works them better than everyone else) and a nice little pocket that I showed him which was very promising for the short time we were there...

Dunno... I've got burgers/dogs/buns/tato salad/onions/relish/kat/must/plates & plastic ware...

Don, do we need charcoal and LF? And your plenty stocked on sweet casting into the wind, bigger than your typical CapeCod shoestring eels (they can be tough sometimes out on the outer cape, look like inch worms)

Chips or soda?

Desert? (Salthearts sugar overload and clean yer plumbing Strawberry delight like last time ;D )

DIGITAL CAMERA??? I've deep sixed mine (might need to grab a cheapy for fishing)

What am I missing - bring your Korkers and any extra pairs if you got 'em (I'm bringing a couple sets j-i-c)

Sounds good, the parent company of Striped-Bass.Com (hehehe), Linesider Technologies (official as of today ;D ), purchased it's first true asset this afternoon, a Kodak digital camera to replace the one (substantially nicer >( ) yon zipperhead here, moi, lost... So I'll have that with tomorrow but bring yer scales (even though were quick measure and release), tape measures, waders, and Korkers if you got 'em...
