Exclamation Strange Day On The Water In Long Island

Gin clear water. E/NE winds to 25 knots. Freakin' cold. No bait. No fish. Skunkarooney.

'tsallright - that's fishing and it's not always catching and I am just happy to be out on the water and with a good fishing buddy.

I'm leaving the beach, in my sand sled and make my way to the 4WD entrance.

What do I see, but a black Ford compact passenger car stuck in the sand up to his axles. The driver, whom I shall designate "Dumbass" decided to see if his car would somehow make it over sand.

Dumbass apparently didn't read the sign that said you needed 4WD and a permit to go through this path.

Dumbass is apparently pleading with passing 4WD’s to pull him out. Not surprisingly, nobody is helping Dumbass out of this predicament, until someone calls the New York State Park Police to inform them that there is a Dumbass passenger car blocking the 4WD vehicle entrance. (Well, actually another kind-hearted S-B member offered Dumbass a shovel to dig the car out.)

Park police show up, and Dumbass gets a $350 ticket for violating the rules, plus he has to pay for a tow (another $100 easily). But the professional tow truck doesn’t want to come out, so Dumbass once again goes about looking for help to get unstuck.

At this point there are about 15 people gathered around to gawk at Dumbass, all people getting onto or leaving the beach.

Dumbass flags down a fella I’ll call “Hero.” Hero is a young guy driving a blaze yellow tonka truck. Hero wants to impress his girlfriend so Hero valiantly agrees to liberate the stuck Dumbass.

Hero hooks up an XHD tow strap to Dumbass, and begins to pull Dumbass out. Hero is gunning the engine and before you know it, Hero and Dumbass are flying out of the sand at 35 mph.

Unfortunately, while being extricated at light speed, Dumbass zigged where he should have zagged, and, incredibly, right before our eyes, Dumbass smashed into a nearby car that was airing back up.

The car that got hit had an entire family in it – back seat had mother and young daughter.

Thank the Lord nobody got hurt. All the same, I’m just amazed nobody got killed.

Needless to say, the Park Police cop who was on scene was REALLY pissed, because now he has to write up an accident report.

Hero takes off like a bat out of hell once the tow strap is disconnected.

The Kooky One and I decide it’s time to go have a beer and dinner.

This is an extra long entry for the log.

Moral of the story: DON'T BE A DUMBASS.

Yo, weewee---how is it getting all the way 'round to that spot where you got your 25 on the burple swimmer? I heard from someone else the access is under water most of the time.

I hate easterly winds on LI in the spring--I was gonna head out last night but didn't want to burn any of the "cheap" $1.91/gallon gas I bought earlier.

Altho if I was there, I guess I wouldn't have been totally skunked if I had my business cards, or a pen and a piece of paper, on me

Mike, that place really changed, the point is all under water. You can still wade out a bit, but there's sure a heck of a lot less to drive on now!

I was thinking more about WAY around----like a full 180 degree turn from the front to the hard structure. I don't mind parking by the front rocks and walking in to wade the bars at the Point, but walking in past the lagoon all the way to the hard structure is a load, and I hear one cop has been issuing tickets to trucks parked along the "sidewalk"

You're kidding me, haven't heard about the ticketing issue.

Oh well, give it another week, the fish should be coming in strong.

I don't know how credible "spygull's" info is but I had a run-in with that cop two years ago. I parked in RM 2 and tried walking into a few places on the backside, and he "asked" me to leave because "that whole area" was closed to night fishing.

I would have gotten his badge number...and then filed a complaint with the park police. Signed by RJ of course.

I thought about writing to the Park Office (on my lawyer-type letterhead) for clarification on the regs, but decided the whole thing was more trouble than it's worth. The whole Moses area is getting to be more trouble than it's worth too. They have barriers across the entrance to the Overlook lot now after dark. You're supposed to get out, move them aside, drive in, stop and move them back into place, if you have the night permit. I decided that was too much trouble and drove up the exit lane. I can't wait until they give me crap for that

I pay $75 for the Suffolk sticker, might as well get my money's worth from it.

MIke,
Heard the same thing at RM. Some guy with a Napoleon complex is giving guys a hard time at a minimum and writing tickets with an attitude at the most. Have yet had the pleasure to meet him yet but then again I don't fish there as often as I would like.
