Too many self proclaimed Moderators
This approach worked so well to reduce the thread hjacking , I thought I'd try again with a different matter.
I see far to many people proclaiming themselves moderators and telling other people what's allowed and what's not. Try to keep your noses clean and if you have an issue , send an email to John or me or if a particular forum has a moderator like Slipknot , get him involved. There's too many people acting like police around here.
this is a very tolerant site , unlike some. Its not anything goes but until someone becomes a real PITA , "Live and Let Live".
Its been a long time since I felt i had to say this here but lets remember , this site is formed around "nice people who like to fish". Its not ego trips and one upsmanship or who gets to tell who what they can do.
If you feel some important rules have been violated , use your moderators if nescessary but please stop sticking your noses into other peoples business just for the pleasuer of telling people what to do..
*************************
Now if everything goes according to plan , there will be 20 nonsensicle responses here but after its all said and done , people will soul search , know they are wrong , and start being more considerate.

Can I be the first nonsensicle response???!!
SH, I spend way to much time out here and I can't say I witness this. Scrolling down, I see polite posts with people enthusistic about other people catching fish and providing answers to others posts.
If people are acting as you suggessted, why not pm them directly?
Okay,,,19 more to go!

We'll have a couple more moderators to help out a little but the board has become a little too, well - what's a hoiyty toiyty phrase similat to panties in a bunch - you know what I mean. But I don't think it should be over medicated either. It's up to you all to think a little before hitting the enter key. It's also up to you all to remember that this isn't even fishing - it's the freikin' Internet. It's typing, granted typing about fishing, but it's typing. It is not the Rosetta Stone of fishing. It is something we should have some fun with (not necessarily at others expense) and something we can learn a tip or two.
I don't have the free space in the brain to think as clearly as I'd like at the moment but some things ain't the same as they used to be. We don't seem to have quite the sharp wit and rolling on the floor laughing commentary that we used to have (good and bad) and the he said she said has gone thru the roof. The negative banter back and forth is worse than its ever been and the attitude is over the top too.
I'm really at odds on how to fix it (if I even can). I've thought of more than a few ways from status-quo to including ones I don't want to do like go completely private. That's not what we are about. We were once an open fishing board where we had a lot of fun. Now it's not as much fun.
I've been trying to remind myself that we are at the end of particularly nasty cabin fever season. I hope that's all it really is. But we need to clean things up a little, spice it a little, and leave the nastiness offline.
Sorry if I'm just rambling here but I just started typing. There is too much important stuff going on for me to dedicate what few remaining intact brain cells I have to worked out a detailed plan to "fix" things or a how to on fishing board ettiquet. A lot of people over time have said that this was always the best board in quality of people. I hope it still is and can be. But for that to work, everyone has to get on board.
PLEASE, I beg all of you, let's get this place back on track and back towards what it was once capable of being. We don't need to be the premiere authority of striper fishing, we don't need to be the biggest, or have the largest quotient of self-appointed experts. Let's have the fun, commraderie, and cumbaya crap that made this place such a promising board not too long ago. I can't tell you how many of you I've learned stuff from, how many of you I've met, how many of you I've come to respect.

Eeee coodeesh, I hope my crocodile mouth hasn't gotten my hummingbird ass in trouble again......
The only thing I can think of to get my shorts in a knot is spot-burning, which ya don't often see here -
In regards to direction and banter, I dunno, John - I think over time it all reaches it's own level - any fishing website is pretty much a combo of barroom, bait shop and watercooler with a little Dear Abby mixed in from time to time -
I think we got a good crew, lots of newer members and everybody sooner or later figures it out between themselves - sorta like being a bouncer, eh? Let 'em try to sort it out between themselves first and when it starts to look like the joint might get busted up, moved the whole freakin' thing out the door toot sweet.
Let 'em just do the old New Bedford squaredance in the parking lot and get it outta their system.
After that, c'mon back in for a beer unless you're the friggin' instigator -
Yeah, I've worked more than a coupla joints like that....weren't bad places, either.
And still check back in from time to time too -

John,
I think a mass convocation is called for. At the usual watering hole! Maybe if folks hoisted a cold one together they wouldb't be so confrontational when they type.

As previously stated , "Its the Clam Rake". There has been nothing but stress, strife, tribulation and unrest since it was unveiled. Its like taking black sand or volcano rock from Hawaii. You gotta do the right thing here JohnR, send it to me & ill tune it for you. Concurrently you may luxuriate on a months sabbatical from your burden as the shepherd of this cheeky flock. .

Hey...yeah, kahuna potato or whatever the hell it is....
I'm thinkin' we oughta just get together for a big bloooberry festival before the big girls show up.
It could be like Bass-stock or something, ya know -
'3 Days of Peace, Love, and Plugs' - well, maybe one long afternoon or nite would do. Laptew fish porn, hot and cold running ale, tall tales, plug-dealing in the parking lot, etc - Elvis Haberek sighting, Tattoo showin' his ink, Bloocrab doing courtroom sketches, me dancing, the Iron Wonder doing his thing, Clamma giving a bluefish seminar, John shaking his head, we could give GB shore-fishing lessons - hey, it could be a helluva thing.
And the guys who still can't get along can just go out in the parking lot and beat the Jesus outta each other and stop buggin' us...
Yeah....BASS-STOCK!
How about May 8th? I hear Notaro's gonna be in Newport that Saturday anyway, we could help the young lad learn how to fully enjoy a frosty blooooberry ale - certainly a rite of passage for any young man...
Uhhh...just be careful where ya stand....
So whaddya think, men?

you don't need to be a moderator to be the "police". some have been on these sites for a long time and their respect has been earned. when one, 2, or several of those people speak up, people tend to listen. and, if they don't listen, many others jump on the thread to back them up. it's how these sites have always worked.
if i see someone puking up spots in detail, i'm going to speak up. i don't care what a moderator says. that's how i feel and i know many others do as well. most know when to speak up and a pm isn't needed. these sites are often read by many people. eventually, someone would see a thread that was causing a stir or foul. but, i'm also not saying don't pm a moderator either. many know when to speak up and you don't need to say something to get them to speak up.
the generation of the "keyboard fisherman" began within the last couple years. the only way those people are going to know what the "rules" are is if they follow by example.

From Central Park in the Big Apple, I lurk here daily with a smile. I think most of the people here are quite nice and very helpful. I also think that this is better than most (all?) of the other bass sites.
The knowledge and wit are top notch.
I even hacked my 706 because of this site.
I wouldn't change a thing.

I agree with ya, addict - best bass site around by far, and a helluva good group. Like anything open to the public, it has it's moments but that comes with the territory.
Hats off to the Head Potato Head, JohnR
Too bad he screwed up his whole routine by finding gainful employment - I'd quit, personally....
Ya know, it's only one of two organizations that ever I've joined (well, outside of the PHSNE) - still can't believe I was lucky enough to find outfits with such low standards as to accept me

I've had some BS from a few contributora to this site and I am happy I did.
Seems they are a bit quieter lately. Had the desired affect.
Call me head strong, call me opinionated, call me stubborn. It's all substantive feedback and I use it to progress.
I think it is safe to assume that some of the less- than - active moderators seem to appear only when they finally decide to actually do the job of moderating.
The fish are here and the difficult winter is over. For the record I am the same person in a bad winter or good.
Something has got to keep you folks from chasing me around on the beach.
