waiting for title

Has anybody bought a boat from someone who still owed the bank money. I am dying here. I'm all ready to go except one thing, the title has not come in yet. It has been almost three weeks. Hopefully any day now.

thats why they call it fishing not catching

It more than likely is not the sellers fault. The past two boats I have sold went through this same process. The bank legally has 10 working days to release your title after the final payment is received and clears. Add a few days of mail time into the mix and you are probably looking at 14-17 working days.

hey?
why do you need the title??

i thought all you needed was a bill of sale, and proof you paid sales tax??

I think you do need a title unless its an older boat or from out of state where they don't require a title. Make sure you bring an etching of your hull ID # off of your transom. New law in Mass, you will not get your paperwork without it.

You need the title and bill of sale and the ecthing!!
Can't reg with out!! You will need to pay tax, reg, and title fee and they don't take cash! So bring to checks one for tax and one for reg and title.

!

Thanks guys. I never new about the etching thing. I guess a pencil and a piece of paper would work ok. That would have sucked waiting inline for nothing. Now that I think of it. I've been waitng behind a line all season for nothing so far!

I ASSUME YOU ARE REGISTERING IN MA.....

I just went through this "ordeal" last month.

First, you need to pay the sales tax on the boat. According to MA-DOR, Sales tax is due on the 20th day of the following month from date of purchase. Good news is you can pay it online at

https://wf.dor.state.ma.us/mrv/welcome.asp

Be sure to only list the boat and motor sales price DO NOT INCLUDE THE TRAILER (if you purchased it as a total price with the boat). You pay the trailer sales tax at the registry of motor vehicles. Also be sure to print TWO copies of the ST-6 form. One for when you register the boat and one for your records.

I also purchased from an owner who had an outstanding bank loan. It took about 2 1/2 weeks for the title to be sent to the broker. Once you get the title, fill out the registration and titling form

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/regis...itlingform.pdf

Take the form, the ST-6 form, the title, bill of sale, and the hull ID tracing (although they didn't even look at mine) to the closest office

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/regoffices.htm

Be sure to have a check or EXACT CASH - no change can be given.

Fees

Motor Boat Registration (Two years)

Length Fee
Under 16 ft $40
16 to < 26 ft $60
26 to < 40 ft $80
40 ft plus $100

Title $25

It's all at http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/ELEREG.htm

Hope that helps.

Dont give a non dealer your money without seeing a title. Without a clean title you will never be able to register the boat.

EXCELLENT POINT!!!

Heck, the broker that I purchased from made sure that I had two bank checks at closing. One was made out to the owner (small check) and one was made out to the bank (BIG check). He told me that this was done to keep dishonest people from not paying the off bank loan and releasing the title. Guess there was a broker in Salisbury, MA that stole money from a dozen or so poor people who "thought" they had purchased boats.

Not sure how you legally protect yourself or do this in a private sale.
