Unhappy The Mung Cometh!!!!!

Just got back from an "extended" lunch/flying lesson where we flew from New Biege over to P-Town and down the back beach to Chatham where we landed and had lunch at the Cloud Nine Cafe at Chatham Airport ( try the Amelia Earhart Sandwich of smoked turkey with cole slaw and honey mustard, it was great) Anyway from Second Rip down to Lecounts there are several humungous patches of mung. Some are miles long and some are already on the beach. 25 feet over the water at 125 knots was wild. If the wind goes east for a couple days the fishing will be toast. Most places it is a wall in the water two casts from shore. Don't ask if I saw any bait or fish ( I did but I cannot tell you where).

Why even try.........

That figures; I'm on vacation next week and was planning to fish till my arms fell off. Oh well, looks like I'll be doing alot of driving, not only looking for fish, now I'll be looking for water.

That must have been a nice flight Flaptail. How'd ya swing that? I was thinkin of splurgin and takin one of the sightseeing plane rides down there next week and try and convince the pilot to swing over a few of the beaches i normally fish just to scout from the air. I know that when I have flown into Logan you can look down and see piles of fish off the run ways clear as day.
It definately seems like the mung keeps getting worse and worse each year.

Back when Gin Grass (sp?) still flew to Cuttyhunk if he was slow he could be conned into doing a lap around the islands in search of fish.

But he was notorious for flying REAL low....

Landing IN BETWEEN THE BOATS IN THE MOORING FIELD IN CUTTYHUNK.

I have been taking flying lessons for a couple years now and my instructor ( who is VFR, IFR, TWIN, COMMERCIAL, SEAPLANE rated) lets me do my thing. He is a really great guy. One day we just went up to do spin and stall practice and he could tell I was frazzled from that so he told me to go up to 6500 feet in between these huge cumulous clouds and he just leaned back in the right hand seat, put his hat over his eyes and said he was going to take a nap and for me to go where I wanted and have a good time. I flew for an hour in between the clouds in these big white valleys like flying down a white grand canyon while he snoozed. I love it up there. We just buzzed right down the coast from P-Town to Chatham and just above the surf line. The tide was an hour into the outgoing and the surf moderate. I have seen whales and seals and fish. Today I was in a Piper Charger low wing with fixed gear. Today Bill ( my instructor said he was going to start having me fly a Cessna 182G with retractable gear. It will cruise on it's 80 gallon tank non-stop from New Bedford to Florida and it will do 200 plus knots. It's the biggest high wing Cessna makes and it's a beast. I can't wait. I tell you after flying a plane yourself you feel real different from most people, more confident in yourself and you can't bring your troubles with you as you have so much to concentrate on and the rewards of being able to see and do things most people can't. We fly to lunch at Marthas Vineyard airport just to have thier steak and cheese sandwich at the airport restaurant. Fly over, eat and be back in my office in less than an hour. Awesome stuff.

Why even try.........

Capesams, regs are no less than 500 feet over people or populated areas ( like a beach) otherwise, depending on your personal level of testicular fortitude, you can go where you like as high or low. Can't fly over Otis, they don't dig that and you gotta stay out five miles from Hyannis or you gotta talk to them and they make you fly where they want. Monomoy minimums are 500 feet up and a 1/4 mile to the side.

I have buzzed friends in Tarpaulin Cove and went over them big assed cows on Nawshawena at 25 feet and they still didn't move!

I have a buddy who has his license and he took 3 of us up in a Cesna. One of the guys really wanted to get into flying as well. Well after hitting a few air pockets and doing a few 'fun' maneuvers, well he changed his mind and decided he belonged on the ground afterall. Haha one of his life long dreams got dashed in the span of a couple hours.

The coolest part of the trip was calling my roomate Katy on my cell phone and telling her to look up in the sky for a plane 'waving' its wings. That's us, that's us!!! She could barely hear me over the noise of the engine.

Lookin for my big'un!

I was out on one of the backside beaches last night... big patches of mung, seals here and there, and after four and a half hours, no bass. There were fishable areas. I spoke with someone who had been fishing all this week, and he said that the mung had just come in on Wednesday. A bunch of small striper heads on the beach...seal candy

Cal, your car does not go in a straight line from here to Florida and also at 6 to 10 thousand feet with a tail wind adding another 60 to 70 knots of speed and the mixture leaned out and the air being much thinner there is less drag. Your rpm level drops back and the engine does not work as hard plus the auto pilot like cruise control maintains maximum fuel efficiency. Oh yeah, pitch control for the prop helps as well. Hope that clarifies it and another thing, the 100% hi-octane fuel is more effecient too!

Probably. Range is a function of fuel consumption (gallons per hour), fuel capacity and ground speed. With retractable gear and an adjustable pitch prop set at low RPMs for cruise, you might have a fuel consumption rate as low as 10 gph. 80 gallons would give you a 1600 nautical mile range at 10 gph consumption and 200 kts ground speed.

I forgot what the minimum reserve specified in the FARs is. Been quite a few years, unfortunately since I was "current"

Those specs are for a fixed gear 'Lane

Looks like Cessna doesn't make the 182RG anymore.
