Talking Come someone recommend a mechanic

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good mechanic. A buddy of mine needs some work done on a mercury 150 hp outboard. Has'nt been started in two years. I'm fairly capable of the wiring etc, but we need an honest answer as to whether or not the engine is worth working on or just swapping out.

You will most likely have a 4-6 week wait at any repair shop around this time of year!! Go and buy a manual, cheap compression tester and see what you got. If compression readings are up to snuff cleaning the carbs would be the next order of business followed by fresh fuel and a set of plugs. If the motor has been sitting all this time before you attempt to turn it in any way shape or form I would drop some oil in the cylinders threw the spark plug holes.

Heres a good overview of 2 stroke engines

http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke1.htm

If you can get it to crank I agree with vector add fresh gas/oil, open gas line, charged battery, carb cleaner, and good spark I bet it'll fire up.
Don't forget to check the lower unit gear oil.

Atlantic Boat Rental in Plymouth is the best I've run across. They do excellent work as well as Outboard rebuilds. I had a problem with my old boat that I took to 6 or 8 different shops, none of which could fix the problem. Ron figured out the problem right away.

I would highly recommend them. He will give you an honest opinion and won't BS you.

Talking Kinda like a tune up on a car

Thanks I knew you guys would point me in the right direction.

So its basically like a tune up on a car. I'll have him pick up the manual for the engine. I'm on vac starting friday and I can already see some of my weekend being spent on that thing, good thing is I can tow his boat and he cant
