Need a good rod for a beginner.

Allright, trying to get Mindi a rod. She's a beginner caster. She is petite. 5'0 or so. I'm thinking a surf rod would be too big and unwieldy for her. She wants to be able to cast lures and for the area we are in, lures are about .5 oz to 2 oz.

Anyone have an idea of a good spinning rod for her? I've seen her cast and she has the basics down. We just need to work on timing the release and loading the rod a little better. She is just a smidge off on both. Otherwise she is doing very well.

An 8ft Ugly Stick is inexpensive, fairly light and can take some accidental misuse.

It can also work an eel and if your take the shot, you can buy the blank and seat guides and do it your self... A strurdy, serviceable AND balanced rod...

The 8 ft st. croix can also foot the bill here though it's a little costly than the ugly stick. I think that will serve her purpose for now since she'll be fishing the sound mostly.

It would probably better if Mindi ask the question herself.

Good suggestions guys. I really want to get her something nice. Was thinking the GSB1081L would make a good rod for her. Probably put one of those new nautil 6500 on there. I really want her to have a good set up right from the start. Once I get the blank, I'll have her feel it out and make some practice casts with one and then I'll cut it down if she needs it.

Partick...as said of the Ugly Stick I will attest to the durability.....with all the traveling and "abuse" mine has taken over the years I am surprised I havent busted it in two........if Mindy has to travel with it a bit...that may a good consideration.....not to mention they are less expensive than many other "decent" options.......so as a beginner if something should happen you (or she) wont be as broken up about it if something happens......

Patrick my wife is a little over 5 feet and she uses an 8' Ugly Stick. She has landed fish with my 10' one also. I would have to agree with Jenn on the durability, and the economical aspect.
