Poppers at night

I thought poppers were no good after dark??? I was getting some nice fish up to the low 20's last night on eels, dannys and needles. RIrockhound had given me a squid popper earlier in the season that i havent got a keeper on yet(he wanted a pic of my first keeper on it). So i decided to give it a shot. First cast i got a nice hit, next cast i hooked a decent fish , but it shook it before i got her in. Couple casts later something massive swirled up and slapped it, this splash was like 4ft around had to be a huge fish!!! Tried for another 20 minutes with a couple of light hits but no hookups before calling it a night. Are there certain conditions and structure where poppers work consitantly at night? Gonna give it a shot again tonight.

The lighter out the better. However, I use poppers in the early am a lot. I'll start getting fish way before first light. Who knows?

Whoever said poppers don't work at night is a fool. I have gotten many at night on poppers.

Theres a certian place i fish where there is some structure waaaaay out at the end of the cast. I cant reach it with any metal lips so thats when i break out the blurple superstrike 2 oz and change little neck. Works like a charm

One of my trips to RI I was over at Capt. Don's an the guy in there i think his name was Mike( Super nice guy) told me that the hot orange neelde had been workin well but he had no more left.he did however have a popper in that color.so i picked one up.i was catchin pretty good then the fish seemed to drop back on the dropping moon tide so i tide on the popper an proceded to keep on catching I think i got my best of the trip on it like 19-20#just swimming it reel slow with an occasional twicht to make it gurgle.

yeah , people say that.

You never want to fish a popper at night with a teaser either , especially a sinking one like an Atom with a black teaser. you never want to let it go just below the surface then pop it to the top and through the surface. . Nope , never do that , people say it doesn't work!

AND you never wanna just cast the popper out there, let it sit for about 10 seconds then reel it in. Never!

I would never throw a popper at night, but after these postings, I may give it a shot.
I also never throw eels once it gets light, that probably junk science too.

After being harassed by blues while fishing eels i switched over to plugs becasue i knew some nice bass were there. After trying a variety of plugs a white popper was the hot lure for the night (until i went back to eels). This was 3:00am wednesday morning, calm surf.

For throwing eels during the day my uncle does well fishing during the day with them. Hes on vacation this week in maine, the best so far for him was 28.5#s on eels, 5:45 in the afternoon, fairly shallow water. Hes got fish much better than that too in bright sun.
