I just picked up one and I want to know how to quiet the clicker. I remember TLap posting something about removing the sideplate and packing it with grease. It is already greased so I don't want to go crazy packing it, where exactly should I pack just for the clicker?

i just pack the whole thing with blue grease, if you put too much in it makes it slightly harder to turn the handle, and it might sometimes ooze out.

pack it right up with as much super lube grease as you can fit.

Just pack around the clicker. If you pack it too much it will be harder to retreive, especially on colder nights. Of course you can always turn it off after each cast the way most guys used to do with the 704. Just watch your knuckles after you set on a fish. Whatever you do don't let go of the handle.

I usually use white lithium grease inside my Shimano Baitrunners. I just bought a 706Z on Ebay yesterday ( I should be a card carrying member of Tackle Buyers Anonymous ). Will I be able to get away using the lithium grease on the 706Z?

You can use white lithium grease but if your intensions are to quiet the clicker, I would use a heavier grease like the blue marine or the surfcaster's grease.

I use blue marine grease and you cant even hear a thing make any clicking noises. I pack it to the point that when I close the side plate, grease is oozing out of the housing. I scrape up all that grease and pack it into the bail sprign housings, then install the springs and attach the bail. after that, i take the greasy paper towel and rub down the entire reel just to give it a slightly greasy coating. I was doing this about once in the spring, once in teh summer and once in the fall. When i change the grease I break it down completely and blast it with carborator cleaner in my tub sink and clean it all out with an old toothbrush and repack it.

the super lube retains roughly the same stiffness when cold. never noticed a difference fishing it into november.

Why worry about the anti-reverse clicker? The line roller in a 706 is loud enough for a guy 200 yards away to tell when you have a fish on.

i pack the line roller with grease too..... it works for a couple outtings tp keep it quiet

Jeez! Is that what was making that noise? I was always baffled when I got that metalo-squeal when line was under pressure. LOL

Yup, that's what you heard. It's the only reel I know of that sounds like it's full of sand right out of the box. The old green ones are even worse.

Still, I love them old grinders. Can't kill one, if it breaks you fix it in 5 minutes.

I did get some sand into it and I got worried. My friend said dont worry, just keep turning the handle.

I heard Crrrkkkkk and then the sand was no more! Grinded it right out. That was nice!

Best reel made for the money i like the clicker gives me a nice cadence for ultra slow retrieves.man my reel made a god awful screech the other night.I love that.To just pack the clicker spin the handle off, open the sideplate an lift up the arm that moves the shaft it lays ontop of the main gear.push the maingear out from the handle side be carefull to mind the dog an spring on the clicker.just pack some grease on the dog an the back side of the main gear an replace.if it feels alittle stiff some lite weight oil in the handle fitting should cure that. good luck an welcome to the reel world.

the roller can be made silent, too. before you asemble a new roller, pack it up with grease. fill the bearing and all of the assembly. smooth as silk!
