after looking at all these great plugs i am thinking about maybe trying.
what do you guys suggest as being the best first plug to make.

i am also thinking of buying from grizzly the lathe that uses the drill? anyone try one of these?

Poppers are a good place to start. You can actually do them by using dowels for the wood and a pocket knife if you need. Definitely easier with tools though

Have not used the grizzly drill lathe that you mentioned. I really don't think it will do the job well, at least not for a bunch of plugs. If you are serious about starting, you might see if someone lives close to you would show you a few things and let you try a few plugs using their tools. Alternatively, you can get kits from njtackle.com. Seal, prime, paint, clear coat, assemble and fish. Cheap way to get started and see if you are into it before you sink some $$ into tools and stuff. Next time you are on the grizzly page, take a look at the 8690 mini-lathe. A number of us started with that one, or one similar to that.

I have to say that after reading alot of posts over here and seeing the great work you guys do I am gonna go for it also. I have alot of experience in wood work and love working with wood and tools. But after seeing/reading I am getting excited to give it a try. I am gonna see if I can find a used lathe over the week and start getting my shop in order...I am seriously excited Weird I know but, I am

Now my wife officially hates me. I made my first plugs by hand last night. I wittled a basic shape and then sanded them smooth. They actually came out kinda nice. Very satisfying.

Next step lathe.

NJtackle's website is down for a week or more. Is there anywhere else locally to get lips, wire, eyes?
